I think the unsettling thing about this is the fact that someone could enter your house with little disturbance (i.e. noise) catching the occupants unawares. Also, the ability to burglarize your home without leaving a trace presents a problem which I addressed above.

I wonder how long this method has been known by locksmiths?

The principle has been around a long time. - These "Bump Keys" are based on the "Pick Guns." And they are not as easy to use as they make seem. Like anything else, it takes practice. I for one never could get the hang of it, but my boss was only two clicks away from opening just about any door he wanted. On the other hand, I always did my best work with my "Jim Rockford" set of picks. BTW, the better the lock is made, (usually higher cost) the harder it is to pick. And there are pick proof locks, as has been mentioned.

BTW possession of lock picks without a VERY good reason, is not a really a good idea since they are considered burglary tools.

Sure, but your picking tools don't have to be much more than a small Allen wrench and a 4-inch long piece of thin metal.

I don't lock anything other than the tool shed. Sometimes I forget to lock it too. I figure if somebody wants in, a swift kick to my front door would do the job. It isn't very thick to begin with. Don't lock the car either. Forth class riding might be better than first class walking, but my cars would be one of the last a person would desire to steal in the first place.

Two suggestions, first an alarm system and secondly a dog.

This is true. Hell, I have made due with the proverbial paper clip more than once. - I was talking about sets of lock pics.
