Snakes on a Plane...for or against?

I admit it, I'm not cool. I miss the trends. I don't notice a new fashion until half the women in this city are draped in it. I blew it big on this one. Snakes on a Plane. What a stupid, stupid premise. I'd decided already for stupidity alone, I'd boycott the film. Want to slow down a snake? Turn down the thermostat. Done.

I boycott Tom Cruise for the same reason. All I can see now is him jumping up and down on Oprah's couch. Stupid.

Then I notice, that Snakes on a Plane is everywhere. Street-wise camera hogs in downtown Manhattan are draping themselves with boas, and I don't mean feathers. This darn thing is headed for cult hit! How? Why?

I think I've figured out some of the How and Why. I just finished reading "The Tipping Point" by Malcolm Gladwell. He makes a very good point that incremental changes - at the right points, can lead to a sweeping epidemic of change. I intend to find the tipping point to bring the Watchtower to it's knees.

In the meantime, I might have to swallow my pride, drown myself in my cultural milieu, and go see the stupid movie. When it hits the dollar theatre. By then, maybe, the rubber snakes will be off store shelves.

I think of it as a fluff movie - not requiring much brain power, only out there for pure enjoyment. Though it does escape me why snakes on a plane would be enjoyable to watch.

My first thought, after turning down the thermostat, "What's next, spiders on a plane? Piranhas on a plane? How about slugs?" I totally missed the cult aspect of the title. At least it tells us exactly what to expect. I suspect the stupid movie will end up a cult classic.

A lot of times the studios will spend mega millions promoting a mediocre or bad film hoping to stir up and/or generate interest. Sort of like trying to create word-of-mouth amongst the Great Unwashed before the film even comes out. That way they can earn big bucks in the first week so that they don't lose money. They know the film's a turkey and if they did nothing, they'd lose a bundle.

Or at least that's the mindset. I don't agree with it, and I think it's a shame they do that and not promote really good little films, which if they did would earn a great deal more money, but whatever.

Stay strong Janet and fight the barbarians at the gate. Don't give in to the dark side. Avoid the stupid movie!

Snakes on a Plane I can deal with. Now Muslims on a plane make me nervous!

Oh, they already did that movie, United Flight 93.

How about Rocky Horror Killer Tomatoes on a Plane?

The marketing angle seems to be "this is the next big cult film!"

You can't market a film as a cult film. Come on! It just happens. For me to go to a theater to see this movie would make me feel like a complete lemming, like I did when I went to see Superman Returns, which sucked completely, as vitually all mega-hyped movies do.

I think that there's a lot of stuff on the regular ol' TV these days that is far more interesting and entertaining that anything that Hollywood is putting out.
