Ordinary People - a modern classic with Mary Tyler Moore, Donald Sutherland, and Timothy Hutton. A story about a family trying to live beyond the tragey of losing their oldest son, with all sorts of interesting dynamics. First movie directed by Robert Redford, won Best Picture in 1980.

Cache - a French film with Juliette Binoche (one of my favorites) and Daniel Auteuil. The husband's hidden past comes out when an unknown stalker leaves a series of videotapes on their front porch. The movie is about lying and guilt. This movie will really make you think - that is, if you like movies that make you think. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387898/
Brick - from imdb.com: A teenage loner pushes his way into the underworld of a high school crime ring to investigate the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend. This movie puts a fresh spin on the film-noir, showing how 'who-dunnit' cliches can be new and interesting. One of my favorites this year. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0393109/
A Room With a View - One of my all-time favorites. Excellent cast with Denholm Elliott, Helena Bonham-Carter, Daniel Day-Lewis, Maggie Smith, Julian Sands, Simon Callow, etc... If you haven't seen this movie, see it now. But of course, don't see it if you hate good literature with lots of dialogue (or if you are a prude and would be offended by full-frontal male nudity). This movie has an infinite amount of things to appreciate; surely the best by the Merchant-Ivory team. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091867/
