Meat on Catholic Friday, JW equivalent?

Much of my JW time was in New Bedford, Massachusetts, a Catholic dominated city. I was a Catholic turned JW.

Recall that prior to Vatican Council II it was a Catholic sin to eat meat on Fridays. Some of us loved to get Catholics at the door and rub their noses in that teaching change with wise-ass questions. We'd capitalize on that teaching that those who deliberately ate meat on Friday committed a 'mortal sin', before a certain date, went to hell. After that date, those same type people would go to heaven.

Then, several things changed with us (the JW's at that time). There was that change in 1962 where their was a flip-flop on the Superior Authorities teaching. About that same time, smoking, which was frowned up became a disfellowshipping offense. These things, and more, used to bother me when I'd go to the door, fearing that someone would rub my nose in our flip-flops -- just like I'd done to the Catholics.

I'm so glad I'm out of that mess especially when you consider things going on with the blood and pedophile issues. Fats

I think it's because the Watchtower Society holds the copyright on New Light™. Only Truth™ as taught by Jehovah's Witnesses is subject to change without notice. Everything else must remain constant.

For me the JW equivalent was sex on a Friday night, before field service Saturday morning. Just couldnt do it.

Now I can do it right there on a Saturday morning!!

Weren't organ transplants verboten at one time, then became a conscience matter? Also, alternative service became acceptable in the 90's.

Was meat on Fridays really a mortal sin? I'd have it pegged as one of the lesser sins.
