I remember it mostly being forbidden because supposedly those dreadful perverted homosexuals invented it to draw nice people into their depraved dance clubs to become mesmerized and have sex. Going to discos made people become gay. Hahaha! I wasn't old enough to go dancing, but I loved the music and I still do. It's fun, happy music, upbeat and you can really dance to it! It's got a good beat, and it's cheerful. It was just a fun era.

I don't have any statistics on how many people decided to become gay from listening or standing under a strobe. Isn't that ridiculous, just another example of how anything fun must be squashed.

I remember the disco days very well. Several younger elders and wive plus singles the same age really got into it when the movie Saturday Night Fever came out. dances and get togethers that included disco dancing were very popular. The Bee Gees, Donna Summer, Joe Tex, et al. We loved it, but it didn't take long for the older elders (elder olders?) let it be known they thought it was nothing more than a sex orgy set to music. The movie "Thank God it's Friday" gave it a second wind but pretty soon it got just too controversial. I had all the latest disco on 8 track. Still brings back mammaries when I hear it.

Disco music was pretty much 'frowned-upon' and going to disco's was definitely out. Too sexual.

There was a MS in our cong (pretty dorky) who would have parties for the teenagers and we would dance. About the only disco that was allowed was 'The Hustle', 'Disco Duck', and 'I Will Survive'.

We did actually have fun then.

I definitely remember several Awake! articles and local needs talks on the perils of disco – yeah, the "gay connection" got some play, but much more was made of the supposedly orgiastic and hypnotic effect of the whole atmosphere: the beat, the revealing clothes, the flashing lights... so they banned it 'cause they just don't understand multimedia pleasures, I guess.

Me, I went along with it 'cause I thought the music was butt-ugly: as plastic as those damn polyester disco suits. It's a little better than Kingdom Melodies, but not much. Mariachi Los Camparos and Josephine Baker is about as slick as I want to hear these days.

I can remember at a District convention a brother giving a talk about a young witness who started learning disco dances.

He said the guy was like John Travolta! (everyone chuckled) Eventually the story lead to the guy turning to drugs and such and ended up dying from it. Always embellishing! Now would we want that to happen to us brothers and sisters? lol

A friend in the hall told me the same thing as most of your responses. It was cool at first, then the bOrg clamped down on it and they stopped going. "The Society always knew what was right. They knew the dangers behind it. I thank them for their wisdom," she told me. I felt like asking, 'couldn't you have made that decision in the first place? If the society didn't clamp down on it, would you still have gone?' But I didn't feel like raising any trouble, because she's a good friend to my family.

I was only around at the tail end of disco and never really heard anything about it at the hall. But whenever I went to school dances, my mom would tsk tsk. Never forbade it though.

I don't know if disco was invented by gays to lure us all in, but I did see a large disco retrospective at the EMP (experience music project-Seattle Center) and the gay lifestyle and disco had very strong early connections, then went more mainstream. It was a fascinating exhibit and while that one is over, if you ever get a chance to see the EMP, take it. Its very cool.

""Grease and Saturday Night the disco movie were banned too""

News to me! Never heard such a thing when I was there in the 70's

Its down to the whims of individual elders and what they had a bee in their bonnet about when they were giving a talk, and where they were giving the talk (as to how many people were then banned). With us, it was some mouldy oldie at an district assembly in Sheffield that said 'Grease' wasnt for christians. So it was then banned for the whole district. Going to see singers perform live was also banned. My friend who was an MS got tickets to see Phil Collins. An elder objected, he kicked up a fuss with the other elders. One of the other elders (who actually loved Phil) said he didnt think it was wrong. It got referred to the circuit overseer who said it wasnt recommended but it was up to the brothers conscience. The original objecting elder told my friend he could therefoe go but would be removed as an MS if he did. Tyrants.
