Why do you think Mormons are more acceptable in society then Witnesses?

Mormons do have some very unique beliefs, but they try do do some good in society-besides the mission work. They aren't so self-righteous. They do not teach shunning that I am aware of-in an institutional way, though I think some may do so as individuals. I was never shunned after i left. Neither were my gay, former LDS friends. ONe of them had his funeral service in the local ward and the bishop gave it to a filled room of LDS friends. He died of AIDS. They gave me a baby shower after I left. That is my personal experience. They don't necessarily fit in (alcohol, temple garments) in some ways, but then again, there are plenty of non drinkers and non smokers in the world who dress neatly. I am not aware of any prescription that they cannot take. Not drinking coffee and tea and cola-well I get it on one level, but on that same level, there could have been a LOT more dietary restrictions. . .fat, calories, etc. Not a LOT of fat LDS people though. . .that is a tenet of their faith, if not one that is stressed frequently. We know there are regular JWs and then there are the scary ones. Same with any religion, including LDS, RC. Baptist etc. There are misconceptions too. And a person who is part or has been part of a religion has a different perspective on it than someone looking at it from the outside. A couple of people I know of on this board have both perspectives. One thing I know-I could speak to any LDS person and not cringe for them, not to mention they would speak to me back! Most JWs look at me like I have grown horns and a tail-and I was never even baptised!

I agree w/ everything Blondie said.

My old secretary's father divorced his first wife and then married another woman and had a bunch more kids. He never paid a dime in child support because he could barely afford to support his second family. It was all screwed up. Again, I think they are in the same boat as JWs. They disrespect their women. They DO shun, as my secretary was living proof of that! They do feel superior to everyone else. They have strange laws of do's and don'ts.

Also, years ago, I worked w/ a labor atty whose brother converted to LDS and married one. He and his bride got married in some holy temple that unless you were LDS and wore the holy garments, you could not go inside of. So she and her family were made to wait outside the building. She has the funniest story that she tells about it! Hysterical. But let me assure you, she and her family were not happy. She told me that her brother pretty much cut them off because he felt he had to chose b/w his religion or his family (who were not LDS) and he picked the church. Now who does that sound like.

Every conversation I've had with non-JWs and non-LDS, people tended to lump JWs & Mormons together.

More people accept them because they are more mainstream as far as holiday celebrations and they take blood transfusions. They also vote and are not anti government like the JWs. Although they also believe in their paradise (heaven) they will be the only ones saved - they are not as vocal against other religions like the witnesses. And they also salute the flag of our country. Lilly
