Elders that don't want to talk about spiritual things

Someone a month or so ago posted a comment here at JWD about how they were surprised that when elders got together, for instance for dinner or some other non-congregational activity, that they seldom or never talked about the Bible or spiritual matters.

(If anyone remembers who made that comment, please let me know! Been trying to find the original thread for hours!)

Now this makes one wonder if the elders are elders because they are really interested in the Bible, or if there is another reason.

Someone else posted in that thread in reply that the reason elders don't talk about spiritual things during their "off" time is that they are afraid of saying something wrong, and then being corrected about it later.

    Comments?

Hmmm...I wish I could find that thread again!!!!

Consider what this means....Elders that don't want to talk about spiritual things during informal gatherings because they might "go beyond what is written" (in The Watchtower).

Where is the sense of Christian Freedom? Suppressed by the Unity at all costs Watchtower mentality?

When I was baptized in 1976 I was wide eyed with wonderment and thought this was the PERFECT spiritual paradise. The body of Elders would always shine with such spirituallity and knowledge. I guess it seemed that way in the beginning. Or maybe I thought it was. As the years wore on it became obvious they not only did not take the lead spiritually but they didn't exist. Don't get me wrong, they were always on the platform encourging everyone to do their utmost in Kingdom Service, but I never saw the leadership. I never saw the Pioneer Spirit, the take lead attitude in leading the congregation. I don't mean they should have all quit their jobs and pioneered but should have talked up a good talk and press forward as they preached to the congregation to do etc, make time for the Kingdom when ever you could. They talked a good talk but when it came to action it didn't exist.

Yes, i remember this phenomanon. I call it that, because i think that it is a subconscious reaction based on the fact that the wt spirituality is mostly artificial. Ie, they subconsciously know that it is bullshit. When they really want to really relax, they need to drop that crap and the facade, cuz it takes so much energy to keep it all in place.

Thanks for these comments. These observations are important, they tell how things among the elders in the congregations REALLY are.

The reality is that the elders are all following directives from Brooklyn in keeping a man-made organization going. What these elders get out of doing this is simply the praise of fellow humans, and a position to hold in an organisational hierarchy.

And if the two people who originally made the comments about elders not wanting to talk about spiritual things read this, please jump say something. Been looking for another good amount of time for your original postingss!

I miss the search function that this forum used to offer!

Just one more reason I can feel that the religion is wrong. My mind can read the evidence all day long but there's something special about your heart telling you that you are doing the right thing.

Just Thursday I met with some girls for a study at a friend's house. I lead it (and I'm a woman!!!) and its at her house. I stayed later to talk to her and we just started talking about how awesome God is and praying together and we were both brought to tears at how wonderful God is to us. That's what Christians should be talking about.

Rarely did people talk about the bible after the meeting.

I remember bringing up a point after the book study and people looked at me like I was crazy.

My recollection of after meeting talk was that it was totally social.

It was like someone threw a switch and you went from spiritual to fleshly mode.

JW,s are so sick of all the meetings and service they are forced to do, the last thing they want to do is talk more about it.

Can you ever remember someone talking about a Watchtower article or anyother publication. I always thought that was amazing here they are flooded with reading material and no one talked about it.

Someone here at JWD said that at the bookstudy they went to ice cream was served afterwards!

Now that is an incentive to hurry up and get over with the study! :)
