Why don't JWs pursue hobbies?

the stuck up arrogant attitude is incredible

I know and being only 16 at the time I could match him pound for pound on the arrogance scale and did so spectacularly on a regular basis.

No wonder I never progressed to doing boring jobs for free round the hall!

DB I can imagine the whole thing! You must have made him soo oooooo cross!

Reminds me of the time I dragged my poor husband and kids to do hall cleaning. Husband had been mentally out of the bOrg for years before my brain switched into gear.

Anyway, the stuck up elder tells my husband who is sitting quietly holding the baby, to go and clean the car park and do the weeding as it needs sorting.

My husband smiled, said 'NO' and carried out looking after the baby without a care in the world. Silly ass that I was in those days, (and some say still am), I was totally mortified. Now it makes me laugh and laugh when I think of the Elders red, angry face and his lack of suitable words!

I had some hobbies. I made my own beer and wine too, but also pursued my hobbies of motorcycles, hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, computers. I think most JWs were reluctant to talk about their non-cult interests because they would get counseled for it. I was counseled for it a few times, but I refused to hide my hobbies from others, and I refused to stop talking about my non-cult interests. When I was counseled for it I used the opportunity to point out to the elders that they were the ones who were behaving abnormally, not me.

This is a link to a recent WT study article, and might answer your question...

    http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/6/75512/1.ashx

The third study article in the August 15th WT is entitled "Tired, But Not Tiring Out."

It is of interest that the Borg are further reducing the quality of life for their members by the following paragraph (pg 24, para 11)

Sometimes what complicates our lives is, not the pursuit of more things, but what we do with the things we already have.

Some may experience emotional fatigue as a result of challenging health problems, the loss of loved ones, or other

distressing problems. They have seen a need to make adjustments from time to time. One married couple decided to

eliminate some of their hobbies and nonessential projects. They actually went through their things and literally packed all

the materials related to such projects and put them out of sight. Periodically, we can all benefit from taking inventory of

our habits and possessions, putting off every unecessary weight so that we may not get tired out and give in to our souls.

On the same page is a picture of a married couple packing "personal projects" in a cardboard box and taping the box. They are both smiling.

The caption is: "Some have eliminated certain hobbies and nonessential projects"

    Truthseeker.

This is exactly what I was talking about and it makes me livid!

The borg attempts to destroy individualism at every opportunity to further its own business objectives/causes, that much is blatant and obvious. I cannot understand why so many fall for such manipulation and mind control tactics.

I can see the photo caption now in my minds eye and know exactly what you mean; this is apart from the fact that Ive not read a watchtower in years!

Certainly, hobbies are not encouraged, although not condemmed, either. I find myself that I can now enjoy them without the guilt that used to go along with pursuing them.

Apparently they have a special on golden ones at the moment but they are fast selling out!

All I can say is many JWs in this area just read that and let it go in one eye and out the other. They just don't tell anybody. Hunting is serious too. Elders miss the CO's visit when it falls during deer season.....

Those balls, that lack of fear, that knack of seeing through the crap that some people have, is certainly worth their weight in gold!!
