Golden Age Magazine

This past week I found on ebay a cd-rom set that contained every single issue of the Golden Age Magazine from 1919-1924. Since I didn't see it for free on download anywhere else on the net, I sprung for the $15 and are eagerly awaiting it's arrivial.
But that is just 1919-1924. There are still many other issues that we can't get our hands on. Basically 1925-1937 when it became 'consolation' and those are pretty hard to come by as well being that the society never produced bound volumes of it (at least I don't think they did).
I know some of you out there have got to have some of these magazines. I was wondering if there was anything we could get going, or strings we could pull to try and get these mags onto CD-ROM. There are quite a few people out there with extensive WTS libraries, but I have no contact with such people.
The Golden Age was one of the strangest WT publications ever made. I would really interested in helping make them more available. Tell me what you are thinking.

I have a server that i can host the CD and share it with folks within reason. They'd have to PM request me for information since i need it for other stuff, but no problem otherwise.

Maybe we could develop something to put material onto CD...create a html menu e.t.c

You will be reading a lot of Rutherford trash it will be interesting to see the kind of non sense he produced during those years some things he wrote are quite hilarious eg the science of medicine is evil because it has its roots in paganism in Ancient Egypt. The dubs were banned from using orthodox medicine, even vaccines.

Actually you will be reading a lot of Clayton Woodworth trash, he was the editor of the GA/Consolation. He had a lot of wild and to us now, humorous ideas.

I've got some issues for sale on my website. As I was going through them, I came across one that had a section on herbal remedies. Some were harmless and about as good as treatment at the time -- that is, not very (e. g., for cancer); but one that caught my eye was an herbal remedy for appendicitis. This was in 1936 or 1937 -- when surgery was a decent option. My mother was operated on in the late 1930s for a ruptured appendix when she was around 4 or 5 years old, and came through it. I shudder to think of the outcome if a doctor had told the family to administer an herbal remedy alone. They weren't JWs, so they had no problem with going to a hospital. They did run into a serious case of malpractice, though -- the doctor treating my mom claimed she was just "spoiled," hinting that she was just faking it when the symptoms first appeared. Grrrrrr ...

Anyway, the issue in question has the following gem of advice: After prescribing an herbal infusion of yarrow, peppermint, and elder blossom, the author advises the patient, "Do not be afraid of the perspiration caused, or if you vomit. ... Nothing should be eaten until a cure is brought about, which is usually certain, even in severe cases."

I guess so, if you count death as a cure.

Doesn't Randy Watters of Freeminds, Inc. have Consolation on CD? I thought I'd seen it somewhere ... I'll have to check around.

Several years ago, Ken Raines scanned and compiled a 1919 to 1924 Golden Age collection on CD. He sold them on his website for a year or two

I think they're copies of his CD. I purchased one from an ebay vendor also (a JW!) which he'd produced. They're very interesting to read! I The ebay vendor said the CD was now under public domain. I tried contacting Ken Raines about it but he did not respond. I'm sure the ebay vendors have circulated dozens of them by now.

That brings up another question -- whether or not Consolation is still under copyright or not. I wouldn't think so, but I'm not up on my copyright law ... That may be why it's not out on CD-ROM yet. I'm also not sure of which publications the Watchtower Society has renewed copyrights on.

I'm not sure but I think there's very little before 1960 that the WT Society still has a copyright on. But, I could be wrong on this.

I heard once that Research Applications was planning on putting out more of the Golden Age magazines on CD-ROM but lately their website has been down. Are they still in business?

Research Applications, last I heard a few months ago, is still planning on putting out a full set of searchable CDs with Golden Age. It might be a couple of years out, though.

Ken Raines has health problems and is no longer active in the community of JW critics.
