What to believe in?

    Notice how there seems to be an almost compulsive tendency to need to "believe" in something, even if it's "myself". Find the "self" first and then see if even there arises any belief. Littletoe alluded to that when he said,

    Sounds reasonable, though for anyone pursuing that route I would have to ask: do you really know thyself?

    Take the statement "know thyself" to the very core by first finding the "self". You can find likes/dislikes, talents, judgments, analytic ability, and all sorts of other "things" but are these the "self"? To whom are those things relevant? Find that. Is that even real, does it really exist or is it only imagined?

    I'm still not quite sure about the first two lines; I still don't call myself a Christian. But...

    I believe in Jesus who fed the five thousand & turned water into wine; I believe in the whip-torn staggering walk up to the cross; I believe in tears of blood; I believe in raggedy Easters and low-rent Resurrections.

    I believe in bare naked impromptu splendor;

    I believe in spastic wisdom; I believe that if everything crooked must be made straight, that everything straight must wind in bright & rhythmical curves.

    I believe in God the great deep earth-fountain of Love underfoot; I believe it lurks below the deepest reaches of human fear & leaps perpetually into the light of day;

    I believe Love is Power;

    I believe there is no uprising without prior hope;

    so I believe in God getting into everything, without a word & without forethought, like a two-year-old child.

    I believe in education.

    I believe that with the advances in medical technology the concept of 'retirement' at a predetermined age will fade away (except for the very ill or the extremely aged). I also believe that in order to remain productive and 'hire-able', a person will have to make higher education a continuing force in their lives well into their 70's and 80's.

    Therefore, I believe that I will be a student for the rest of my life and that my life will be better for it. I like that. Yeah, I'll go with that belief...it's not so bad as a 'belief'. Continued learning and mental growth until they put me in a pine box. Cool.

    I believe in the here, the now, what I can see, smell, taste and touch. What IS!

    Keeping it simple.

    I still haven't joined any religion, nor do I see myself doing so anytime soon either. I guess I just take one day at a time for right now. I try to stay in the moment. Enjoy the moment and make the best out of it. What happens, happens.

    P.S. Welcome back, you were missed.

    Good for you IronClaw. When you are truly in the moment "time" doesn't exist and you aren't influenced by past belief systems. All there is is now, this very moment, so there is no need to muck it up with thoughts about how things should or shouldn't be based on some belief system/philosophy.
