Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of Him to the other side, while He dismissed the crowd. After He had dismissed them, He went up on a mountainside by Himself to pray. When evening came He was there alone but the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. During the 4th watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw Him walking on the lake they were terrified. "It's a ghost they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them, "Take courage. It is I. Don't be afraid."(Matt 14:22-27)

14When she recognized Peter's voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, "Peter is at the door!"

15"You're out of your mind," they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, "It must be his angel."

16But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished. NIV
    (Acts 12)

The last one is sometimes made to suggest a guadian angel but the voice was that of Peter making that conslusion unlikely. In both instances the NT depicts the Christians as believing in Ghosts/spirits of the death.

7 Saul then said to his attendants, "Find me a woman who is a medium, so I may go and inquire of her."
"There is one in Endor," they said.

Saul was stupid. He should have visited the Ewoks while he was there.

PeacefulPete: Wouldn`t you say that this story in Samuel is proof of the belief in an afterlife also in the OT? Samuel comes out of the ground (Hades, I guess)...it`s not just a "spirit" (demon, which is what the jws would have to explain it away as), it`s the spirit of Samuel, a servant of God.

Earthtone, I know that you got the scripture that you were seeking; but I thought that you might remember this bible occurrence too.

If you studied the book of Acts with us this summer you may also remember that while in Philippi, Paul got into trouble because God used him to heal a demon-possessed slave girl. This girl had been a source of profit for her owners for, in her possessed state, she would tell fortunes and they were angry that she was now in her right mind and no longer able to do so. They complained and the local authorities had Paul and Silas beaten and thrown into prison. (Acts 16:23-24 ) But as Paul and Silas were singing and worshiping God in that prison, God sent an earthquake, which literally opened a door through which Paul led the jailer and his family to faith in Christ.

Have you seen the movie "The Skeleton Key"? That movie is weird!

Yes, I would. The OT has a number of allussions to the fate of the dead as weakly shades , not dead, not fully alive.

    A Side Point:

The apostle Paul clearly discusses an Out-of-Body experiance (Astral Projection) of someone he knew. 2 Corinthians 12: 2 ~ 5

I'm not connecting this with Spiritism or Life After Death, as I am convinced by Paul's testimony and my own personal experiances from childhood on, that OBE's are a natural part of the human condition created by God.

They are not without risk however.

I got curious and wondered what the definition of a prophet is. I found these terms or related words for prophet:

    </form>Entry Word: prophet
    Function: noun
Text: one who predicts future events or developments <a prophet who swore he could see wars before they happened>
Synonyms augur, diviner, forecaster, foreseer, foreteller, fortune-teller, futurist, prognosticator, prophesier, seer, soothsayer Related Wordsprophetess; mystic, oracle; astrologer

False prophets aren't supposed to be from God, but what about an oracle that can predict the future? Aren't they both considered evil? How are we supposed to know if God sent the real prophet as opposed to an oracle? I know someone has an easy answer for this one.
