banned bands and songs

anybody have the bethal list of banned musicians and songs. i remember after my sister got baptised she said that the brother who dunked her under told her not to listen to a song, i think it was "new sensation" or something like that which was a popular song for the 80's period. i remember a lot of songs being banned because of lyrics that had nothing to do with what they thought it had to do with. if i'm mistaken, michael jackson was never baptised but they banned his music anyway because of "thriller". anyone remember any song or bands?

well I bought a single by the Art of Noise back in the 80s and I remember it having a skull or something on the cover, my dad came into my room and was terribly serious. He said the record was demonised and I had to watch him smash it to pieces.

The whole experience terrified the life out of me, I thought I had been enticing the demons into my room by listening to this record. I now realise he was totally off his head.

They didn't ban any music as such but we were not allowed to listen to Radio 1or watch Top of the Pops - but then that would have been difficult given that we didn't have a tv. Basically any music we enjoyed was pretty much banned for being unsuitable.

Madonna stands out for me in terms of WT memories...not much into her now, but back in the day when she was first 'big'... what can I say? I was young and hormonal...

After having the first tape I bought confiscated by my mother, taken back to the shop and exchanged for a Beach Boys compilation (don't get me wrong, I like the Beach Boys, but...), I went out, bought BOTH the albums that were out at the time (yes, it was THAT long ago), and bought a lockable cash box specifically to hide them, and listened to them on my walkman.

The height of my teen rebellion, that was....

Most of my music was censored in some way or another and particularly in relation to my vast collection of rock and metal.

One track that was definately banned in my house was 'Blasphemous Rumours' - Depeche Mode. I think it was the chorus that got to her.

'I dont want to cause any blasphemous rumours, but I think that gods got a sick sense of humour and when I die, I expect to find him laughing'.

I didn't have any music that my study conductor thought dubious, but my boyfriend was advised to dispose of almost his entire collection when he came in to the wts, especially his Led Zeppelin and Doors albums. He didn't get rid of them, just moved them out of sight of ant jws who might call.

Gerard Le Roux who studied with me (when I was a teenager) used to rifle through my CD every week and LECTURE me on my demonic music... it was the one thing I FOUGHT for while a Dub, MY MUSIC. I was into The Cure, The Cult, The Smiths, The Violent Femmes, The Cramps, Depeche Mode, The Sisters of Mercy, The Housemartins etc etc. My older sisters where more into the Hi Energy and pop movement... Gerard used to rifle through my CD's clucking, whittering, twittering, huffing, puffing... I had most of the hard core stuff on cassette so not on general display... but I had ALL The Cult albums... I remember the album Sonic Temple used to get him SERIOUSLY agitated... it kinda became sport in the end with him. Bless him... if he was Catholic, he would have crossed himself to ward off the evil spirits in that album. The ironic thing was, when I went to Bethel, I was SERIOUSLY into The Beautiful South (the remnants of the housemartins... and they are still my favourite band of all time to this very day). Gerard discovered The Beautiful South through me.... and because it sounds quite melodic, one tends not to listen to the words too much... well he never used to... it did not "sound demonised" (whatever that meant) so he used to sing along.... and lyrics like:

You don't need one if it isn't on the kingdom melodies, it's banned by association with satan's world. Though, I know elders and pioneers the love stairway to heaven, ( by Led Zepplin) depite the the known occult refrences. Not to knock the song it's good, but slightly strange for an elder or his wife to like.

I remember at the circuit assy. they said in a talk, Antrax, Motley Crue, Sabbath. One elder gave a talk in our congregation entitled "Do you know what a swan song is?" This elder was an illiterate briar who started the talk with a small tape player held next to the microphone playing Heart's "Magic Man". I thought the song sounded cool played over our p.a. system at the hall. I think his last name was Mullins or something like that. The point of the talk was those kinds of songs and bands would soon be replaced in Jehovah's loving kingdom with wholesome kingdom melodies. That was about the time Michael Jackson's "Thriller" was taking off. That would have been from southwest Ohio between Dayton and Cincinnati. There were a lot of briar uneducated elders who loved the only time they were given any kind of authority outside their families. God they made me laugh.

I remember when I was a little kid, there was a certain Earth Wind & Fire album that was a "no-no". From what I remember, it didn't have anything to do with lyrics, but had to do with the album cover. The album cover had some of the ancient Egyptian religious sculptures on it.
