Nobody ever said that the end was coming in 1975.

All the hype about this date that has continued all the way down through today came from a talk in the early 70's by Fred Franz. In this talk, Franz pointed out the significance of the 7 creative days and how they correspond with 1,000-year time intervals.

He then said, "Could the end come in 1975? It could, but we don't know." (or something like that)

There's so much wrong with Jehovah's Witnesses from their rigid legalism to their faux love, but let's call a spade a spade about the 1975 thing.

The argument can be made that the Society
did or did not say that the end would come
    in 1975.

However, there are plenty of individuals on
this board who could testify that the Society
implied that 1975, would be the end of this
system of things in a number of ways.

I am sure you will receive certain proofs
    in other commentaries posted later.

I was there. I remember arguing, somewhat heatedly, with an elder about 1975. I felt strongly then that Armageddon would not come in 1975. I remember talks at circuit assemblies and district conventions that constantly warned the "End" was near and was measured in months.

I was in the White Rock congregation in Dallas, Texas. During the early months of 1975, we used to have 50 or 60 people show up on Saturday mornings. The congregation had a dozen pioneers and as many auxiliary (were they called temporary pioneers back then? memory is fading now).

I won't get into pointless Clinton-like arguments about whether the Society actually printed the exact phrase that Armageddon was coming in 1975 (although most people believed it to be October 1975). The point is that most Witnesses did believe it, passionately, and the Society (at the very least) did nothing to stop that belief.

Of course they didn't. They're not going to do anything to hurt their numbers.

Freddy started it and the governing assholes supported it by rumor and speaking out of both sides of their mouth. Of course they never made the statement "1975 is the End"...but "all indications lead to that conclusion"...and "thinking individuals can reasonably conclude" and on and on. Listen to what was said at conventions and by CO's and DO's.

Armageddon frenzy = big gains in publishers and $$$$$$$$$$$$$ Oh if only they could figure a way to do it again and get away with it. Actually they have but not to that degree.

I was there and witnessed first hand that the hype was there. We were told that we would not grow up, go to collage and have a family in this system of things. Also there are a number of WT books and magazines that implied the 1975 date.

1968 "Thus, Adam's naming of the animals and his realizing that he needed a counterpart would have occupied only a brief time after his creation. Since it was also Jehovah's purpose for man to multiply and fill the earth, it is logical that he would create Eve soon after Adam, perhaps just a few weeks or months later in the same year, 4026 B.C.E. After her creation, God's rest day, the seventh period, immediately followed. 'When were Adam and Eve created?' .. After [Eve's] creation, God's rest day, the seventh period, immediately followed. Therefore, God's seventh day and the time man has been on earth apparently run parallel. To calculate where man is in the stream of time relative to God's seventh day of 7,000 years, we need to determine how long a time has elapsed from the year of Adam and Eve's creation in 4026 B.C.E.. The seventh day of the Jewish week, the sabbath, would well picture the final 1,000-year reign of God's kingdom under Christ when mankind would be uplifted from 6,000 years of sin and death. (Rev. 20:6) Hence, when Christians note from God's timetable the approaching end of 6,000 years of human history, it fills them with anticipation. Particularly is this true because the great sign of the "last days" has been in the course of fulfillment since the beginning of the "time of the end" in 1914... eight years remain to account for a full 6,000 years of the seventh day. Eight years from the autumn of 1967 would bring us to the autumn of 1975, fully 6,000 years into God's seventh day, his rest day. The immediate future is certain to be filled with climatic events, for this old system is nearing its complete end. Within a few years at most the final parts of Bible prophecy relative to these 'last days' will undergo fulfillment, resulting in the liberation of surviving mankind into Christ's glorious 1,000-year reign!" {WT May 1 1968 271-3} [the cautionary "No one can say with certainty what any particular year will bring." clearly being lost in the tumult]

1968 "Jesus was obviously speaking about those who were old enough to witness with understanding what took place when the 'last days' began. Jesus was saying that some of those persons who were alive at the appearance of the `sign of the last days' would still be alive when God brought this system to its end.. Even if we presume that youngsters 15 years of age would be perceptive enough to realize the import of what happened in 1914, it would still make the youngest of 'this generation' nearly 70 years old today. So the great majority of the generation to which Jesus was referring has already passed away in death. The remaining ones are approaching old age. And remember, Jesus said that the end of this wicked world would come before that generation passed away in death." {AWAK Oct 8 1968 13-4} [So the end of the wicked world is very close.. 1975 at the latest, by which time those 15 year olds will be 76, older than any Biblically defined generation]

    1969 "If you are a young person, you also need to face the fact that you will never grow old in this present system of things. Why not? Because all the evidence in fulfillment of Bible prophecy indicates that this corrupt system is due to end in a few years. Of the generation that observed the beginning of the 'last days' in 1914, Jesus foretold: 'This generation will by no means pass away until all these things occur.' Therefore, as a young person, you will never fulfill any career that this system offers. If you are in high school and thinking about a college education, it means at least four, perhaps even six or eight more years to graduate into a specialized career. But where will this system of things be by that time? It will be well on the way towards its finish, if not actually gone! This is why parents who base their lives on God's prophetic Word find it much more practical to direct their young ones into trades that do not require such long periods of additional schooling.. True, those who do not understand where we are in the stream of time from God's viewpoint will call this impractical. But which is really practical: preparing yourself for a position in this world that soon will pass away? or working toward surviving this system's end and enjoying eternal life in God's righteous new order?" {AWAK May 22 1969 15}

1974 "How Are You Using Your Life? .. Yes, the end of this system is so very near! Is that not reason to increase our activity? In this regard we can learn something from a runner who puts on a final burst of speed near the finish of a race. Look at Jesus, who apparently stepped up his activity during his final days on earth. In fact, over 27 percent of the material in the Gospels is devoted to just the last week of Jesus' earthly ministry!-Matt. 21:1-27:50; Mark 11:1-15:37; Luke 19:29-23:46; John 11:55-19:30. By carefully and prayerfully examining our own circumstances, we also may find that we can spend more time and energy in preaching during this final period before the present system ends. Many of our brothers and sisters are doing just that. This is evident from the rapidly increasing number of pioneers. Yes, since the summer of 1973 there have been new peaks in pioneers every month. Now there are 20,394 regular and special pioneers in the United States, an all-time peak. That is 5,190 more than there were in February 1973! A 34-percent increase! Does that not warm our hearts? Reports are heard of brothers selling their homes and property and planning to finish out the rest of their days in this old system in the pioneer service. Certainly this is a fine way to spend the short time remaining before the wicked world's end.-1 John 2:17. Remain an enduring witness to his wisdom and faithfulness!" {KMIN May 1974 3} [compare with WT Nov 1 1992 18 "If .. minimal or even high school education will only allow them to find jobs providing insufficient income to support themselves as pioneers, then supplementary education or training might be considered. This would be with the specific goal of full-time service." A complete volte-face.]

    ORLY????

Of course they said it would come in 1975. I specifically remember the phrase, 'a matter of months, not yrs' being used in print. That means that it should have come at the lastest in 1976. You are the one denial about this.

I heard a close relative of mine discussing the 1975 situation with Karl Klein. This was after 1975 when the number of publishers went into negative numbers. Karl Klein said that the members of the governing body were teasing Fred Franz about 1975 earlier in the year 1975 and his answer was "it isn't fall yet!"

They left a few saving clauses in their 1975 pronouncements. Maybe in their publications they allowed themselves some wiggle room but the whole thrust of the organization from 1966 onward was that something big-significant was going to happen in 1975. They weren't clear whether the great tribulation was going to start or if it would be over by then.

The whole thing was a debacle. It was not the figment of the members imaginations even though that's what the Watchtower would like to have everyone believe.

WTF: ***Nobody ever said that the end was coming in 1975.***

You're technically correct. The WTS never said "Armageddon is coming in 1975." All they did was name 1975 as significant in Bible chronology. They admonished JWs to put off their education, marriage, children, homes, etc., because the end was "just around the corner." They urged increasing fs hours to bring in sheeplike ones because the time was so short.

If someone puts on a firefighting outfit, urges you to drop everything you're doing and hop on the truck, drives with all the sirens screaming, only to arrive at a house without so much as a wisp of smoke coming from it, do you really believe the firefighter is excused if he tells you, "I never actually SAID there was a fire"?

Let's just get something straight about 1975. The WTS did everything but say the words that the end was coming in 1975. Do the words "imply," "suggest," "hint," "insinuate," mean nothing to you? The WTS behaved like a child caught with his hand in the cookie jar -- denying any wrongdoing while still trying to grab the goodies.
