WHY NO LIBEL THREAT?

I write this due to thinking about the problems Trev and Linda have had with Watchtower regarding their website, which clearly states on the homepage that if one is a JW the site isn't for them. http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/11/121693/1.ashx

The site can be found here: http://beehive.thisisderbyshire.co.uk/default.asp?WCI=SiteHome&ID=12882

My point is, many times here and on other sites one will find posts calling Watchtower a liar; how it's lied about the generation change, Armageddon dates, the blood issue, faithful and discreet slave, etc. Well, if what Watchtower says is true why aren't they suing this site, or individuals who post here or, at the very least, getting this site closed down for libel? It couldn't be because we're telling the TRUTH could it?!!

    Hi Ian,

Thanks for posting this. I may be wrong, but I suspect that the jws picked on my site because they thought they could maybe put pressure on the Beehive admin to close it down altogether, which, I am reliably informed by the Beehive, is what they actually wanted. They used the child abuse article, probably thinking it's the most controversial article on there, and threatened legal action against both me and the Beehive network if it wasn't removed. I know, as we all do on here, that it was most likely an empty threat, but the admin caved in, and asked me to remove the article, which I did.

I know that since then, the jws have been in touch with admin again, and asked why the site is still there, but the Beehive's response was that I had posted a disclaimer on my homepage that should deter any jws from looking at the rest of the site, and if they did look, and were offended by what they saw, then it is their responsibility, not mine. The site is fine, and will remain in place for as long as I want it to. The Beehive then offerred the jws the opportunity to set up their own site on the network. As yet, as far as I am aware, they have not responded to this offer.

I think they know that any threats they made to sites like this would be ignored. We know the truth about the watchtower on here, mostly from bitter personal experience, and if the wts monitor this site, they will be well aware of the futility of any action against JWD and other discussion boards.

Heaven Forbid the the Watchtower would endorse the concept of Free Speech! First thing you know those busy little publishers might start thinking for themselves and who knows what mischief that might lead to.

If I recall well someone can't be sued for libel against an organisation but only against individuals against actual persons, at least that's the way it is in the democratic world, but in the dictatorial world one can get sued for defaming the armed forces for example or the ruling clan.

I've literally just this minute been asked if a website can use my story to let others know the dangers of JWism. Of course I consented!

I'll let you know when it's up!

    Well Dansk,

One thing I do know is that libel laws in the UK are alot more draconian than here in the U.S.. I guess the WTBTS figured that the laws were draconian enough over there that a mere threat of a libel suit would be enough to get the site shut down. It hasn't worked, so I guess the next move is theirs, after what happened to Quotes, I wouldn't take that threat lightly.

    Hi Dansk,

When JWs bring up "apostate" lies spread by Ray Franz, I innocently say "I heard he's printed multiple editions of his book. I wonder if the WTS has sued him for libel?"

    Hi Ian,

Me thinks the Watch Tower Publishing conglomerate doesn't sue for damages because they do not want to prove the loss. It's called discovery. Here in the USA, if you sue me and claim a loss, I'll subpoena your books:-)

Do we think the Society does NOT want their books open as a part of the public record?

    DEDPOET:

What was the story with your site? I assume that you posted the societies own WT article on child abuse and they wanted it taked down and claimed copyright infringement to get it taken down?

Weird that they sue you and "quotes" to get articles taken off the internet that they are so obsessively hawking on the streets everyday... Do they want people to get the "message" or not...?

Kudra, Trev (dedpoet) wrote the article himself. This is it here:

    Jehovahs Witnesses and child abuse
Child abuse is a blight on society, and most religions, including the Jehovahs Witnesses, have their own problems in that area. However, it is the way those problems are usually handled that makes the Witnesses differrent from most other faiths. There is no doubt that child abuse is a crime, and should be reported to the relevant authorities when discovered. The Witnesses don't quite see it this way, however. They prefer to allow the congregation elders handle these matters. Now, the Witnesses take the Bible literally, include several verses that say there must be at least two witnesses to every act of wrongdoing, or the matter cannot be established, even in serious cases like child abuse. Very few abusers wait around for witnesses when they are about to rape a 4 or 5 year old child, so if they are Witnesses, and the elders get to hear about their alleged conduct, a simple denial will suffice to have the matter taken no further. The police are not informed, and the abuser is free to continue molesting children. One former Witness described the organisation as a "paedophile paradise", and there is plenty of well - documented evidence to back up his allegation. A few years ago, it was revealed that, at the world HQ of Jehovahs Witnesses in Brooklyn, New York, there existed a database containing the names of 23,720 Witnesses who were alleged child abusers, very few of whom had been reported to the police, and only a tiny minority who had been reported by the elders. All too often, it is the abuse victims who do the reporting, and they are then usually disfellowshipped, or expelled, from the congregation rather than being offerred any kind of support. Wives who complained about their husbands have been told to "pray more, and be a better wife" to stop the abuse. Clearly, whatever their scriptural reasoning is, the Jehovahs Witnesses policy on child abuse is WRONG. It is seemingly designed to shield the abuser and persecute the victim, when any decent person would expect it to be the other way around. Maybe, as pressure grows on the church, particularly in the USA, this policy will be reviewed, but if the Witnesses track record on admitting their mistakes is anything to go by, that is unlikely. In the meantime, let us all be aware of the kind of people that may be visiting our homes. Some of them could have a less - than pure motive for being there.

He named no one, and we all know there's plenty of evidence to back up what he wrote. Whether the jws especially objected to that article, or just specified it when asked by the site admin what had upset them, we don't know. I rather think that they picked that one as the most controversial in their eyes, because we know they really wanted the whole site shutting down, which hasn't happened, and won't happen.
