an internet forum that has become cultish

A few years ago I used to frequent the above-linked forum. It was founded to discuss etiquette--namely, how to avoid offending others and how to deal with the rude behavior of others without being rude back. In the beginning, it was an interesting discussion.

Over the last year or so, it has gone completely crazy. It was really beginning to trigger my memories of being in a high control group.

    • They appointed a bunch of mods who go around correcting everything. Everything.you.say.
    • There are unspoken rules, and if you're not a pioneer in the popular crowd, you will be punished for breaking the unspoken rules, some of which are invented after you break them.
    • They have a clear hierarchy. They actually even made an offshoot private forum for the most popular posters to discuss how to make the rest of the posters behave. Sound familiar?
    • If you engage in independent thinking disagree with someone, even if you do so politely, you are disfellowshipped banned.
    • If you aren't officially banned, the posters are v-e-r-y quick to put you on "ignore", meaning that you are allowed to participate in the forum, but everyone completely shuns ignores you.....making you eventually become inactive because there is no point in going there if no one will talk to you.
    • Posters are not allowed to give a bad witness say bad things about the forum or they are immediately banned.
    • Elders forum mods actually visit competing forums to spy on posters, and if they're found even talking to worldly people posters from other forums, or gasp! previously disfellowshipped banned people, they get banned themselves or at the very least, get on the "b" list.
    • At one point (don't know what they do nowadays), they were actually announcing when someone was put on reproof gagged for a few days or disfellowshipped banned, and specifically why.
    • The Presiding Overseer forum creator has become a power hungry, raving mad lunatic (as evidenced by the link I shared above).

An interesting study in cultish social dynamics.....

So, rebel8, are you one of the banned ones? Are you guilty of independent thinking?

Maybe I'm just more sensitive to it now since I left the cult, and just looking for it all the time, but I find myself always on guard against the attempts of others to control. In almost any group of people you can find some who want to control, and those who bite their tongues out of fear of losing their status among the others.

People like that are legends in their own minds.

I really did laugh out loud when I read "power hungry". Power hungry on a frickin' "etiquette" forum?! Petty and idiotic. Must take etiquette pretty darn seriously I guess.

I don't think I'm banned, just put on ignore by virtually everyone, for politely expressing an unpopular opinion. Come to think of it, that's how I would describe my social status with the jws. Ironic.

Ettiquette can be cultic behaviour in its own right, if pushed too far.

OMG, it just keeps getting worse!

a la Watchtower vs. Quotes lawsuit, the forum owner has now posted a statement saying she's going to sue people if they say she did something wrong!! (well that's a summary)
