Feeding the Homeless

One day this week, my daughter volunteered to feed and serve the homeless. Every Wednesday at a certain shelter the homeless are fed with business people in the community. The ones that can pay $3 a plate and if you cannot pay all that is asked is that you clear off your dirty dishes, etc.

I found this combination a bit odd. There were people there in suits, she said. But, I thought, how humbling, and supportive the experiance must be.

Volunteers getting everything ready, serving and doing the cleanup. The volunteering of food, drinks, dessert, etc. The people who care in the community .....coming to meet and mingle and talk with the people they help on an equal level. Sitting at a meal.

I had a really good feeling inside that my daughter did this. She is 19.......was moved in her heart to do it. I could not help but to feel that it was just as important as any spiritual feeding could be. The work that people do to help others, should never be discounted. I always had a problem with this in Witness thinking. We are all on this planet together. So many good things are done at all different levels.

A meal to someone hungry may be just what is needed to provide comfort .........that maybe a witness walking through the park; spotting them......giving them some spiritual encouragement. I was thinking in the witness mindset the volunteers who fed this person, would be destroyed as they are not witnesses........but the witnesses themselves would not feed this hungry person.........

you know what I am trying to say.....

Bless your daughter and I understand what you are saying. The witnesses forget the story of the good samaritan. I think thats wonderful for a young girl to care about the needy people.

I recently ran into a homeless (witness kid) who has been abandoned by his family, he is in his 20's and no home sleeps in the park and many times no food. Bought him a large subway sandwich, and a quart of milk. He was stunned when I gave this to him. told him I knew a little of his background and that his family abandoning him in his time of troubles was typical of the people of his former religion. He hasn't had any witness help him at all. Very typical of them. Told him when I see him again I will once more get his something to eat and drink and to be on the look out for me and wave me over when he sees my car or truck.

the society doesn't even believing the homeless, the destitute, the elderly, they do believe in feeding all their particular brand of bull shit as it is. But won't lift a finger to really help someone.

I befriended a homeless guy on my recent trip to the USA who was a famous guy who had become homeless. It was a huge eye opener to me. And this guy was the nicest guy in the world. It's a long story... maybe another time.

    They are taught not to.

I've been told by the elders NOT to give money for charitable reasons.

The Kingdom is the permanent solution they will say when asked why they won't feed them.

Those decision makers have a lot to learn from the lessons of Christ. Christ knew that a starving man cannot think about spiritual issues when his stomach is hurting or he is sleeping in the cold.

When I worked at the homeless shelter in Winnipeg people would sometimes be so hungry that they ate the stale donuts left for them. They lined up for a bit of hot soup and coffee.

People wind up being homeless for a really wide assortment of reasons. They aren't all addicts. Many, if not the majority, have serious mental health issues.

Letting them starve while offering to them a magazine is absurd, especially when you are on your way for coffee break

I think people in general are fearful of the homeless. I don't think it's that hard to become homeless. Look how much of a struggle it is to stay afloat. How much work it takes to keep things going.

One watchtower study, we were talking about being kind to others. I mentioned that taking care of people's physical needs was as important or more important than spiritual needs if he lacks the fundamentals. I referenced Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and I might as well have been speaking Chinese for all the impact it made in people's minds. Apparently handing out tracts are more important than feeding people.
