    Little bo peep:

Just enjoy the time for the time, if you know what I mean..... Myself, I think of it as a way to get through winter time!!! (wouldn't work if I lived in Australia!!!), just brightens up the house, a day to look forward to and make a special effort. Everyones time is at a premium and it pushes one into seeing more of each other and trying harder. So, it makes you a more christian person I feel!

I wouldn't dwell on the significance of the tree, the lights, the decorations the turkey..... oh my god, just GO FOR IT and have fun xx

    Merry Christmas everyone XXX

It was a gradual thing for us. We would go to our daughter's house for Christmas and buy all the grandchildren presents, at first. We didn't do any decorating at home. Then I bought a fireplace mantle garland and decorated it with lights and ornaments.

The next year I bought a tiny tree and decorated it with earring sized ornaments and bought presents for more people.

3 years ago we had our first real tree. Now I buy lots of presents.

Lights on the house this year.

It's kind of a bittersweet holiday for us. My parents became JW's when I was only 4 years old, so I remember Christmas once I think. We raised all 4 of our children without it, so seeing how wonderful it really is now, it makes us sad that we didn't have all the traditions for them to look back on.

About 6 years ago I started baking gingerbread people and decorating them with two of the grandkids. They look forward to that every year. Another grandchild is here during the Christmas season (I babysit him from time to time) and he always wants to make Christmas cookies and decorate them. So I'm starting new traditions.

We have dual bay windows and I plan on putting a little candle light in each of them this year. It will probably be the only decorating I ever do for Christmas. I find it to be an excessively commercial holiday and despite breaking free from the society I really have no desire to get big into it. We have adopted a needy child for the last few years and bought them presents. We will be exchanging gifts with my hubby's family for the first time this year. As far as a tree goes. I just don't understand them. What does a tree have to do with Christ or birthdays? I find the whole tree thing strange and so I don't think I will ever have one. Too much trouble.

Awol said "It's not that I start going all religous or pagan blah blah, but don't you think it's great that every body is excited by the same thing at the same time!!! People smile more etc! How can that be bad????"

I can identify! I don't care if people call it "pagan". When I think about my forebears from the old world, grimly making their way through the cold, dark winters, waiting for the turn of when daylight would begin showing a little bit more, day after day. I think that people psychologically NEED to have holidays, in order to make it through the darkest, hardest parts of the seasons. They serve as markers - such as Winter Solstice - after that, you KNOW that every day the "day" will get a little longer. During this time of year, I really do look forward to that Solstice, it's the perverbial "light at the end of the tunnel". LOL! So if that's pagan, then I'm an unreconstituted pagan.

So this year, year 3 and counting "out", I'm putting up a tree, because my honey is coming from Montreal to be with me for the very first time, so it's double special. I'm sure I've posted elsewhere here - don't remember where - this group moves along so FAST! - Well, I've been shopping on line for ornaments, and am going to Chicago at the end of the month with the "girls" (all never been JW's) and I intend to spend, spend, spend - all on xmas stuff!

    Dear awol,

Thats a great story!! I am so happy for you!! What got all of you questioning things?? Don't know if we will have a tree yet. But we did buy a "frosty" for the front yard. He lights up nice and bright! It ought to be fun to see the JW neighbors face after that!! Been buying Christmas decorations, garlands, etc. We listen to Christmas music all throughout the year from time to time. Not sure if hubby will go for a tree yet. Old ways die hard. I think though once frosty goes up and he sees were damned for sure, he may say let's go for it..ha ha ha!!

    Sincerely,

    Lady Liberty

We connect no religion to Christmas at all, at our house. It's all about Santa Claus, reindeer, and snowmen. No nativity, no angels, no religious anything. I skip the religious Christmas songs on my CD's and am looking for a CD that has generic Christmas songs. But.......my favorite Christmas song is "O Holy Night".

I know that must sound weird to those who still have a deep religious connection, but we just don't. Been there, done that............ALL DONE!!!

The tree is just so pretty and fun to decorate and look at. We look forward to doing our tree every year.
