I was told that the Scouts were too patriotic and we did not support their fund-raising efforts due to the neutrality issue. Somehow I seem to recall a connection to military-like training, too.

I was a 9-year-old Girl Scout when my parents started studying. My troop (a military term) met Thursday afternoons. There was a misunderstanding in the car on the way to the KingdomHall one Thursday evening and my dad thought I was still in my Scout Uniform (another military reference). I was actually in meeting clothes, but he misunderstood for a few seconds. I remember an argument and that was my last Scout meeting.

My mom continued to buy ThinMints on the sly and would hide them all the way in the back of the freezer.

Girl Scouts are said to teach patriotism and that's why you aren't allowed to support them. I think it's actually been in the literature, maybe the same article that prohibited joining the YMCA.

Apparently making flags out of macaroni and glue is evil.

Thin mints are twice as good straight from the freezer!! They are three times as good straight from the freezer whrn you find them after forgetting you had any!

Buying Girl Scout cookies was verboten where I grew up.

But like so many other "rules", over time many of the newer dubs had never heard about this quirky rule and had no qualms about buying them. They only found out when some old-timer JW would try to apply Matthew 18(I think) and counsel them about it.

I bet the majority of JWs who saw that Boston Legal episode went, 'uh uhhhh...we do too buy Girl Scout cookies...how dare they say that..." and the persecution complex kicks in, not realizing that some time ago that it was an unwritten rule in some parts of the country.

This is one of those odd things. Our congregation knew we weren't supposed to buy Girl Scout cookies any more than we weren't supposed to join the YMCA. But people still did sometimes on the sly. I think it was emphasized more though that they shouldn't jointhe Girl Scouts.

I think the scripture the witness use in this case is: "Be no part of the world unless it tastes good."

I thought that as long as we're talking about things a JW cannot do is discouraged from participating in, I would repost this old chestnut:

Jehovah's Witnesses tell people that they do not have a lot of regulations; that they simply teach the Bible, and that each person makes up his own mind about what they call "matters of conscience."
