No, I think that people would only post when they thought certain others are online here. Also if you weren't replying to a post and someone knew you were there lurking they'd get all mad...
It just seems to have too many possible negative effects.

I've adjusted to having very few replies to my topics. Now I always assume that I'm just writing for my own amusement.
But if you are hoping to have people reply to a topic you care about and really want an opinion on, I can understand why having an idea of how many folks were online at the time could help.
...I always glance at the active topics page and see who's making the latest posts. That won't tell you how many are on, but gives an idea of who's replying recently.

Personally, I think a feature to check if your friends are online detracts from the seriousness of a forum. If it's a sensible debate, most people are willing to wait for answers, after all we are in three different time zones anyhow.
I think Simons responded to this one before, and the reason why he doesn't want to is that theres some people trolling who would use a feature like that to find when no moderators were online, and take the oppurtunity to have some mischief. Perhaps one of the mods could give some more information about this.
Gadget wins the prize. I have posted on boards where you can see who is online. Sometimes I just want to take a quick peel at something. If people knew I was online I think a lot of people would be upset if I didn't respond to their post asap. As a mod I think I would get bombarded with PMs You can get an idea of who is around by looking at the Active Topics and see who has recently posted
