Tonsillectomies?

My oldest is having her tonsils and adenoids out on Monday. The doctor will also be maybe putting tubes in her ears if sees that theres a problem, as he will be doing some work in her ears during the same surgery.

I've read all the information they've given us, doesn't seem like a huge deal.

I'm wondering though how many have either had their tonsils out as children and remember the experience or how many have had children who have the surgery.

I would just like to know from others what I might be able to expect.

    Any input?

I had mine out when I was seven. I think it was a bad idea. Tonsillectomies may cause auto-immune diseases later in life. Like your appendix, tonsils may be used for some things in the body we do not appreciate fully.

    Thanks slimboy for the input.

I know with her, they need to come out. They're very swollen and it's making it hard for her to breathe, especially at night.

The doctor said that on a scale of 1 to 4, in terms of how large they are, her's are between 3 and 4.

    Yuck.

I'm 57 and had mine out when I was in first grade - I was always sick before they were removed.

It is no big thing when you are young. But as an adult it is very painful after surgery and you can have complications. My daughter had them out when she was 20. For her it was a horrible experience. When she was younger she had a lot of infections, but the Dr. was of the mindset that they are needed to fight infection. If I had to make the decision over again I wouldn't have listened to this Dr.

This was my son as well. He was having sleep apnea problems, which is not good when you add asthma as well.

He also had his adenoids removed. It helped him tremendously. He had very little trouble afterward, we just took care of him propped him up in our bed during the day and let him rest and watch TV. He was a little fragile at first, didn't really want much (even ice cream), but within a week he was fine. No regrets here about having had it done.

    Good luck.

    thx juni!

I was talking with one woman the other day and she had said her daughter had hers out just recently, and that she is 18 and it was pretty bad.

I hope that it makes a difference in sleeping and her health.

    Thank you for the encouragement,

Also I might add that I know of another little boy who is 5 who has bad tonsils - causes the sleep apnea as the other poster had mentioned. He's having his out next week also but on Wed.

Take care and I know everything will be for the better. Having them sick all of the time is not good.

Thank You thank you Big Tex and Juni for those experiences.

You both pinpointed problems we're having with her.

That sleep apnea and not sleeping well really adds to the rate of how often they get sick.

It's good to hear such positive experiences. I've been wondering how much it would help.

I hate the idea of her being in any surgery, but she needs to get this taken care of.

(Sorry Big Tex for missing your post before, I think you posted while I was typing!)

    No worries.

Our son had about a 75% blockage if I recall correctly. He had it done when he was 7 (if that helps).

It's nerve wracking and my wife hated seeing her little boy afterward because he was a drugged and not able to talk. His throat hurt quite a lot and once when he started crying it really hurt, which made her go all to pieces.

Just hang in there and think long term. He's 10 now, sleeps great with no apnea. Still has the asthma but that's another issue. In fact he barely remembers having had it done now.

Let us know how it goes, okay?

I had mine out when I was 14 - it was pretty ugly. I was very sick and ended up spending close to 2 wks in hospital until they finally sent me home. What bothered me most though was the lie. Before I went in for surgery, the doctor and m parents kept telling me it was no big deal - you'll go to sleep and when you wake up we'll bring you home - its only for a few hours. I would rather have known that when I woke up my throat would be in agony, I wouldn't be able to speak or eat and a day or so might be needed to recuperate in the hospital. Instead - I got the reassurance they thought they had to give me when all I really needed was on a scale of 1-10 how much will it hurt along with a healthy dose of honesty. My sisters had theirs out when they were 3 and 4 and were in and out, up and about in no time. sammieswife.
