hi, everyone. i'm hearing rumors that a letter is going to be read at this week's service meeting here in the US about kids and the internet. anyone know anything about it?? Let me guess--its another "the internet is evil" propaganda letter trying to steer everyone away from going online...

It probably is another warning. With all the information readily available, anybody that does make a serious attempt to see the truth about the jw will get everything they can handle. Well, the more they warn, the more those with nagging doubts start looking around.

Hi there, and welcome to the forum.
I imagine it will be more anti - internet propaganda as well, which tends to work against them anyway, if they could but see it. It makes people curious, they tend to take a look, and if they get on a site like this one, anything can happen.
I expect the jws here will be hearing the same advice.

Haven't heard a thing but I'm sure it's more same old, same old.
Just wanted to say WELCOME to the FORUM, Owen! We're glad you're here.

We have active JWs on the board, including elders who would have heard of this by now.
Like the "big announcement" rumours (which oddly enough, were always started by first-post newbies ), methinks this is, once again, an attempt to blow smoke up our.....well, you get the picture....

I missed the meeting this last week (again, darn it) and that letter was read. My wife said it was a strong letter about the dangers of the internet. She was kind of WOWed by it, but as she related it, it was nothing new. I knew that they are worried about the negative information available. It mentioned chat and pornography specifically, talked about young ones. Maybe someone who actually heard the letter can say more.

The letter seemed to have the intent to protect kids form predators. They did not mention any specific cites but I think they were refering to ones like "My Space". They mentioned the danger of giving out personal info like address, etc. They also mentioned the danger of posting pictures. All in all I felt it was sound information.

There are real dangers on the internet for both adults and children. But the WTS is worried about dangers to itself and its authority. If they were truly worried about dangers to children, they would be reporting JW pedophiles or possible pedophiles to the police who are more qualified to investigate a crime. Can you imagine trying to handle a murder in-house rather than reporting the murderer to the police?
