    and what is Super Tuesday?

The presidential candidates start out spending huge amounts of money trying to affect the Iowa and New Hampshire primaries. The momentum has become very important. Geographically speaking however, Iowa is located in the Midwest and New Hampshire is located in the Northeast. As you probably know by now, political views differ widely within the regions of the US. Super Tuesday introduces another 8-10 additional states that are primarily in the South and Southwest. Bill Clinton ressurected his campaign by winning alot of the Southern states in his run for the presidency.

The Dems have added Nevada (heavy hispanic vote) and South Carolina (heavy African American vote) to the front of the list of primaries, because of pressure to make the initial states even more representative of the their total voting block.

If you are not #1 or a close #2 after the initial states of Iowa, NH and Super Tuesday....you usually give your concession speech and bow out of the race..

    sass,

The other thing to keep in mind is the enormous amount of money required to effectively run for President. It is estimated that Hillary Clinton spent 23 million in traditionally conservative parts of NY state during her recent Senate campaign.

Before these primaries, heavily funded campaigns will heavily saturate those states with ads. Most candidates simply don't have the funding needed to rebound from early defeats in the primaries. Hillary Clinton will be enormously funded, so she will be able to absorb early defeats better than anyone. Most other Dem candidates like Barack Obama will need to get out of the gate quickly.
