I have a fan that when I turn it on I can faintly hear an animal cry. When I turn it off I don't hear the animal cry anymore. I think I need a new fan. But I don't discount evp's I just can't explain them.
White Noise and EVP... Anyone believe it to be true?

Never heard of it until now this is way out there. My question why would they do this? Does not the dead have something better to do? Like sleep, or float, I know the Muslim dead can not be doing this they are too bussy screwing their seventy virgins?

i think its that our brains unconsiously seek out sense in noises and sights, and white noise will have some kind of pattern in it visually or thru sound and the brain picks up on that and you see or hear the closest thing that your brain remembers to that sound or sight pattern. add to that the DESIRE to see or hear something and the power of suggestion has a lot to work with.

AK - Jeff:
There are an amazing number of people who believe that this is true - anyone have personal thoughts on this phenomenon?
It seems to me that there is no hypothesis so absurd that it cannot find strong support somewhere. No matter how easy it is to find a mundane explanation, some people will always choose to believe a more unlikely one. For some people, the less likely an explanation is to be the correct one, the more likely they are to believe it. So it's no surprise to me that some of these people have decided to interpret static and other interference on tapes as communication from the spirit realm.
I almost wish I was unscrupulous enough to exploit their gullibility.

Late at night there is a radio show Coast To Coast AM with George Noory during the week and Coast To Coast AM with Art Bell during the weekend that has people on who play some of those tapes. A few of them can send a chill down your spine, but I question how legit they are.
Art Bell, more-so than George Noory likes to have these ghost hunters with their tapes on.
AK - Jeff, don't be shocked by how many people believe this stuff. Coast To Coast AM has one of the largest radio audiences of any radio program. They claim between 2 and 5 million people tune in every night. Here is their list of stations.

Without counting, looks like about 200 stations.

Thanx Jayhawk.
Yes - I am familiar with the radio program you refer to.
I don't know what to think of some of this - but the sheer volume of those who have experienced 'something' make it seem unlikely that they are all kooks, as suggested by the skeptics.

Jeff,
I've heard some EVP's. They are just too creepy.

I bet these people could find "secret messages" in recordings of farts.
Only if you play them backwards. Last time I ate cabbage rolls you could hear Ivan Rebroff singing "Across the Grassland" backwards whenever I farted.
Weird.
