Oh yeah! According to several articles in my knitting mags in Wales or thereabouts back in the day knitting was a man thing. And from what I've read there are a few men knitting groups around too. A lot of info about men knitting is on the web.

My father used to sell his own knitting patterns to 'Paton & Baldwin's', that was in the early 30's
My sister in Tasmania still has a knitted jacket made by him to his own pattern, with his own patented casting on stitch.
Incidentally he was an oil well driller in Venezuela!
Men DO knit

I wanted to learn to knit so had someone show me. Then I forgot how to cast on and was trying to figure it out by looking online.
My husband then helps me since I'm a bit ADD and sometimes my brain see's things backwards.
He then gets into and creates his own pattern that knitters have said only master knitters can do. He made himself a cool Christmas hat, wish I knew how to post pictures so you could see it. I usually can't see the vidoes but I'm going to try.

That s cool, Scully.
Fokyc, that is WAY cool... I know of an older gentleman who does some beautiful knitting, from hats, to scarves and sweaters...all cable knit and other neat stitches. He was the first man that I knew, who knitted. Nothing wrong with that!!
Delilah, of the loves knitting class....

I'm afraid that most men who knit will be viewed as... well... very "proud".

I am a knitter and have a book which gives the history of knitting--yes it is a man thing and originated in Arabia and done by men.
There are lots of websites and blogs of knitters and lots of neat patterns, and DIY has a knitting show every day called Knitty Gritty which shows some really neat stuff. And if you are mathematically inclined, the website diynetwork.com has some patterns using the principles of moebius and Fibonacci math system.

Smocking used to be a manly thing that farmers did, so I can accept that knitting could be a man thing.

Do these men get castrated before or after they start knitting?
