The Awake's Amusing "Straddle and Pander" Trend

  After reading the latest Awake ( Jan 07) on sickness, I was amused by their efforts to simultaneously straddle

  world developments and pander to their audience.

  They describe modern wonders emerging ( nanotechnology! genomics! stem cells!) - and then talk about all the

  diseases that still exist ( HIV, malaria, TB) - and ( of course!) end with the "hope" that God will cure everyone,

  right after he gets done slaughtering 99.9% of the human race at Armageddon.

  I suppose they are trying to 'innoculate' ordinary Witnesses against hearing news that tends to make

  their cult irrelevant - the lame walking, the blind seeing and so on. So, they throw in some news of modern wonders

  that are emerging. This also helps circulation among people who read the Awake as if it were the Reader's

  Digest. Of course, they always must end with the formulaic ' God will fix ( insert problem here) soon'!

  I think they must try to retain burned out readers from Europe ( where dah money comes from) while still

  pandering to third world types and 'worse and worse' losers everywhere ( where dah baptisms come from).

  This straddle must get increasingly difficult as they become aware ( or is it "Awake"?) of a changing world

  whose trends don't favor them! 'Pie in the sky' promises by the Watchtower are being replaced by

  results from hard science.

  Next month , they will tell you how to"avoid homosexuality". That ought to be a hoot!

  ( I think if you avoid linking any genital with any same sex orifice, you've pretty much got it.)

  They are so messed up, its unbelievable. First, they lump homosexuality into any other "sin" which can simply be "avoided," like one avoids stepping in dog poo on the sidewalk. Then, they will surely bring up child molesting - which is really wrong (but they miss that point) - and also refer to it as a sin to be avoided. "If you're sitting in the meeting and fantasizing about having sex with little children, pray to God, read his Word for direction, and avoid being put in situations where the child might tempt you..." - something like that. Let me go puke now.

  Their bs gets less and less believeable in modern countries the longer time goes on, and it's hard to see how they can continue to convince people, even current jws, in the West anymore. Hopefully this trend will continue as even the more underdeveloped countries gain access to information about advancements in science and medicine. When people start to realise that a cure for whatever is ailing them may be available now or in the near future, they will be less likely to accept the wts solution of a mass slaughter at armageddon followed by an instant cure for all the survivors.

  I can barely wait for this one! I wonder if it will contain this piece of divine wisdom, from one of their diatribes against masturbation

  Helpful in this regard, then, is appreciating the fact that autoeroticism or masturbation is no mere innocent pastime but rather a practice that can lead to homosexual acts. How so? In that self-induced masturbation may make it easier and more tempting for one to engage in mutual masturbation, which is a form of homosexuality. Sincerely striving against this practice will go far to protect a youth.

  In order to keep the lines of communication open with my family, I agreed to let them send me the literature. I've got no problem with that, especially if it makes them feel good. They sent me the latest magazines. I've just been too busy to even give them the once over. Like metatron I've noticed how utterly useless the Awake! magazine is. In fact, while I was still a nominal Witness, I got tired of the "formula" mentioned by metatron. I feel bad for all those young people in the Org who are aware of their sexual orientation but who are obliged to suppress it for the sake of some outdated religious ideal. So, the old men in Brooklyn are going to tell us how not to be "gay". That ought to heap a load of unnecessary guilt on a bunch of people. Dave

  At my DC, it was acknowledged that scientific advances are incredible and could make man live forever. But...get this...the "end" is so close that by the time science figure it out we will be long in the Paradise!

  Oh, crap. Is there really an article on homosexuality coming up? Those things usually make my mother unbearable for two or three months! And she's supposed to come for a visit in March (of course, we'll be footing the bill for a nice hotel, since she can't sleep under the same roof as a pair of middle-aged lesbians in flannel pajamas!).

  Arrrgggh.

  But you're definitely right, Metatron. The only "innoculaton" the GB really worries about is the one that prevents thinking.

  My repressed sex life in the Jehovah's Witnesses Well I tell ya,i never became a homosexual or anything sexual until i was 46 years old yes indeed i really believed in that shit about jehover giving me the girl of my dreams in the "new system".Meanwhile all the other brothers single AND married are carrying on like whoremasters and jeering me a nerdy geek.
