I always thought Azazel was where the term scapegoat came from...dont know for sure though!

Azazel and the Se'irim Azazel is the chief of the Se'irim, or goat-demons, who haunted the desert and to whom most primitive Semitic (most likely non-Hebrew) tribes offered sacrifices. The Old Testament states that Jeroboam appointed priests for the Se'irim. But Josiah destroyed the places of their worship, as the practices accompanying this worship involved copulation of women with goats.
The Se'irim, or hairy demons as the word itself means, are mentioned in Leviticus 17:7 and 2 Chronicles 11:15 as "goat-demons". Isaiah 34:14 says that the "goat-demons" greet each other amoung the ruins of Edom along with Lilith and other wild beasts.

Actually Azazel was not originally mentioned in 1 Enoch. In the original Aramaic and Greek, the name was "Asael" (spelled either `s'l or `sh'l in 4QEn a 1 3:8, 4QEn c 1 2:26, and Asaél in the Greek versions), which is Northwest Semitic for "God has made" and is distinct from the `z'zl of Leviticus 16:10. See 2 Samuel 2:18-32, 23:24, 2 Chronicles 17:8, and Ezra 10:15 for other instances of this name, and the meaning of the name is interpreted in 1 Enoch 8:1 through Asael's function as a maker of metal instruments, and in 9:6 (ha epoiésan Asaél "the things made/done by Asael"). Azazel appears only in the late Ethiopic text which is based on the Greek; so the incursion of "Azazel" in the text represents influence from popular interpretations of Leviticus 16. The origins of the Asael and Shemihazah myths lie in the type of Canaanite/Phoenician foundational myths attested in the work of Philo of Byblos (and indirectly through Hesiod). This assimilation is especially occasioned by the description of the banishment of Asael in 1 Enoch 10:4-6, in which the angel is cast in an abyss "in the wilderness that is in Doudael," amongst the "sharp" (chdd) rocks. Leviticus 16:10 places Azazel "in the wilderness" and the Targum Pseudo-Jonathan of Leviticus 16:10, 21 calls the place where the scapegoat has been banished as byt chdwdy -- a name that seems to reflect both the sharp (chdd) rocks and the "Doudael" of 1 Enoch 10:4-5. So the process of assimilation seems to have begun prior to the time the Ethiopic was translated from the Greek, such that the interpretive tradition began to see the Asael of 1 Enoch and the Azazel of Leviticus as the same being.

So is he a God that was cast to earth or an angel that was cast to earth? Oh and is he a being or a demon now? And why did they have to send him stuff? Was Jehovah scared of him? I thought that you weren't supposed to make sacrifices to false gods?
I guess it okay to make sacrifices to false gods if Jehovah says you're supposed to? I'm confused! Sounds like Azazel/Asael was like one of those thing that christians mixed with paganism like the dubs say happened with Christmas.

This was after the flood. During the annual Day of Atonement, as commanded in the Law, two goats were prepared for the atonement of Israel's sins. Lots were drawn for each goat. One goat was designated "for Jehovah" and the other "for Azazel". Jehovah's was slaughtered and sacrificed, while as stated in Lev 16:21-22, the preist is to "lay both hands on the head of the live goat [the one for Azazel, AKA "the scapegoat"] and confess over it all the wickedness and rebellion of the Israelites--all their sins--and put them on the goat's head. He shall send the goat away into the desert in the care of a man appointed for the task. The goat will carry on itself all their sins to a solitary place; and the man shall release it in the desert."
So the sins of the Israelites were sent to Azazel through the live goat, by means of the shed blood of the other.

So, Azazel is supposed to be like Jesus? What is the purpose of making an atonement to Jehovah, who is the most high if you still had to make a sacrifice to a demon-being?
