I was thinking last night of alot of the BS I've heard from the platform over the years and I thought of a real doosie and figured I'd post it for you all.

We had our CO visit a few months ago. In his opening talk he was encouraging the Stepford congregation by regailing us with experiences from his visit with our sister congregation the week prior. He noted that they started 30-sumthin' bible studies in that one week! Now, I was shocked, we live in a semi-rural area and it's hard to get 30 people home in a month so to start 30 bible studies??? Then I started thinking about last weeks episode of Prison Break and Survivor and the next thing you know, it's time to go home (is ADD always a bad thing?). Anyway, during a talk later in the week he had a few demonstrations on how to start effective bible studies, though THIS TIME he called them "door step bible studies". I suppose this was brighter light since they were just run-of-the-mill bible studies a few days ago and now they are called something different. Anyway, the demo went somethng like this:

    Housholder: Can I help you?

Lemming: Good morning. I'm involved in a volunteer work and am asking the question, Do you think the end of false religion is near?

    Householder: I don't know.

Lemming: Well, this magazine shows us that it is indeed near. Let me read this paragraph from page 3.

    Householder: Interesting.

Lemming: These are your copies to keep.

    Householder: Thank you.

Lemming: I'd like to stop by in a few days to see if you had any questions.

    HH: OK.

    Lemming: Have a nice day!

That's it! That's a bible study! Are people really dumb enough to think that that constitutes a bible study?? BTW, Our congregation started like 60 or something.

I remember when the CO would come by and do the same thing, we started 20 some BS today. Same practice, no you didn't, your pep rally talk may work in your mind, but the reality of it, what you started today was just that BS. Actually CO should be redone, it should be CO2.

There was an over zealous MS that came back from working a territory that I hated.

He made a comment about how wonderful the territory was and that the car group started something like five studies in on Saturday morning.

At the time I was very disturbed. How could he find so many sheep when I only talked to assholes? In retrospect, I am sure what he was doing was reading a scripture and calling it a study. I am also positive that none of those people answered the door the next time he came by. (i.e. HBH - home but hiding)

In light of how lame a description of a "bible study" this is, I would say that only 30 is pretty piszpoor results! Only 30???

And let me just add, so much for the "accurate" yearly report on the worldwide preaching work, and the quality of JW statistics.

I strongly suspect the uptick in "Bible Studies" being counted is due to this - people calling what used to be just a "Return Visit" a "Bible Study".

Technically, by their own standards, you're not supposed to count it as a "Bible Study" until you've done it 3 times and "have reason to believe it will continue".

Ultimately, it is a meaningless number. The key number will continue to be the number of baptisms, which continues to drop. Not so many years ago, it was advertised in the WT as "more than 1000 baptized per day", a few years later it was "5000 per week", now it is even less than that.

And having pioneered for several years back in the late 60s early 70s I can tell you that we were pretty much required to follow a more conservative set of rules...like posted, only after 2 return visits, and you had to have a regular day and time, go inside the house, etc.

Of course, that did not stop everybody from hooking up with 5 or 6 really lonely housebound people who just wanted to talk, and dropping by every so often to "study the bible". Chances of such "studies" ever even coming to KH, let alone be baptised, were of course nil. Another favorite tactic was to find teenage unbaptized kids of some single mom and "study" with them to help the busy mom avoid the time & effort.

We would have been reprimanded back in the day for calling such a thing as the "door step study" a real bible study. Maybe even dropped from the pioneer ranks. A further example of how diluted the service effort has become after 30 years time...what they are calling a "regular pioneer" now would barely fullfil the requirements for "vacation pioneer" back then.

It should more acurately be called 'Watchtower published Book' study, not Bible study!
