A JEHOVAH'S Witness died in a Sheffield hospital after refusing a blood transfusion for a hysterectomy. Alison Mallinder, aged 44, suffered complications during surgery at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and died five days after the operation. Mrs Mallinder, of Mansfield Road, Worksop, only mentioned she was a Jehovah's Witness the day before her operation, and refused to be given blood products, a Sheffield inquest heard.
She had decided to have a hysterectomy after suffering years of abdominal pain. Professor of reproductive surgery and medicine Ti C Li said: "She did not want to make a fuss about the fact she was a Jehovah's Witness which is why she had not mentioned it until the day before the operation."I asked her if she wanted to go on because of the increased risks, especially if there was significant bleeding. But she was clear in her mind that she wanted to get on with the operation. Having satisfied myself that she realised the risks, we proceeded with the operation ." Prof Li said it was rare for a blood transfusion to be needed during a hysterectomy but he did the operation himself, instead of a junior. He discovered some of her abdominal organs were stuck together as a result of a previous operation. Four surgeons worked for three hours to separate them. Mrs Mallinder suffered heavy bleeding and a tear to her small bowel, which was repaired.
Heavy bleeding led to a severe drop in levels of haemoglobin, which carries oxygen to major organs. She was put on a ventilator in intensive care and given drugs to try to counteract blood loss, but died on June 11.
Coroner Chris Dorries gave a narrative verdict that Mrs Mallinder died after suffering complications during and after surgery "and the subsequent treatment regime against a background of refusal to accept blood products". 23 December 2006 [email protected] send your letters to editor

'Heavy bleeding led to a severe drop in levels of haemoglobin, which carries oxygen to major organs. '
Isn't haemoglobin allowed? Would this mean she rejected the fractions as well? -

Another tragedy caused by the nonsensical Watchtower NO Blood Policy.
The sickening thing now is that the policy is no longer understandable by the ordinary R and F Witness. They stick to the No Blood, No Anything stance because it is so confusing. It would be interesting to know this lady's 'spiritual background' in Witness land. I suspect she had no intention of mentioning that she did not want blood but perhaps began to panic as surgery approached due to the 'disease bogey man' that the WTBTS has inplanted in its slaves' minds. But that's just a suspicion, as the usual JW fanatic enjoys the 'fuss' of demanding NO BLOOD!!
No mention of children or husband, either, unless I missed it. Very sad! Also, extremely selfish!!

Sad, sad story .. Sheffield is not-a-million mile from here so perhaps I can identify more with the story.
Always, dubs are strongly told to tell the surgeon and anaesthetist at the very first opportunity about their wishes on blood. I can remember giving such advice myself in years gone by and now it is far more complicated with different options available. I am sure the HLC would have told her the same . Were they involved beforehand? Perhaps she was embarrassed about it ?
She sound like one of those who have taken the 'no blood products at all' viewpoint. That is not entirely due to a lack of understanding of the Society's position. Many of the long time dubs just do not want it. They still feel that it is breaking God's law, and they have been so well taught in the past that blood is "the most dangerous treatment that we have" that they are convinced that they will catch something nasty if they take it.
Her condition reminds of the experience of a 'sister' of my acquaintance whom I dealt with as an elder in the old days. She suffered endometriosis, which sounds a bit like this woman's symptoms. She found a gynaecologist who was prepared to give a hysterectomy without blood. She recovered well and always said that bloodless treatment benefited her. Perhaps this experience makes one realize the risk that she was taking.

I was fortunate to survive and emergency caesarean section a few years ago after losing 2 and a half litres of blood in a few minutes.
Was I afraid of what God would think if I had blood when the doctors pleaded with me to take blood? Was I hell! I was afraid of what disease I might get and also afraid of being DF'd and Shunned!
Looking back, I know I should say sorry to those doctors who I put through so much trauma! I should apologise to my husband who was shocked for years over what he saw in that operating theatre. But I look at my self as I was and realise what FEAR, and I mean real FEAR of blood the WTBTS had intilled in me for my whole life. I was NOT afraid to die! I was afraid to have a blood transfusion! How irrational is that?!
I understand why this JW lady died. It was the fault of the WTBTS!!

What a waste of life, another sacrifice on the watchtower altar because of their insane no blood policy.
I am left wondering how many deaths it will take until they see how evil this policy really is. Or, more likely, they will never see it, and people like this woman will continue to sacrifice their lives for nothing.

Some how I bed the family sues for malpractice. It wasn't the doctors fault but society will blame the doctor and the family will just want some justice. Or hopefully this causes them to sue the society or atleast leave.
