I decided to surprise visit my brother (we used to be extremely close) on NYEve. I brought a present for his kids which they were excited about. I stood at the door a little uncomfortable for a few minutes and then I said,"Dude, I just drove all the way up here on my motorcycle in the cold, aren't you going to ask me in?" He hesitated for a few seconds and then invited me in. We ended up talking and playing with his kids for about a half hour. Then he said that our sister and his wife were coming back soon and that I had to leave. I said that I wanted to see my sister, but then he said, "Do you really want to put her in that situation of being with a disfellowshipped person?" I said, " well let's let her decide," but he insisted almost frantically that I leave. As it was he was going to have to explain to his wife why he let me in. So I left. It was a good call to let it go I think. I am counting this as progress. Next year I am coming back with more gifts for everybody.

It was definitely progress, Shawn, and good for you!!!!
How horrifyingly sad that these people make these weird ridiculous hells for themselves.
PROGRESS!!! Hugs and happy new year to you

Congratulations, I know what a massive big deal that is!! Even though it's awful that we are so grateful for these little scraps that they fearfully throw us from their big table of Love, it's great that you're in it for the long haul. I figure that if they're not allowed to forget us, there's a way through. Always make it a totally positive experience for them; short and very sweet, cheerful laughing joy.... Kill them with kindness... make it hurt them! It's a tiny little revenge, and it's the only way to get through their fear.
To be honest I don't miss my family these days, I've come to realise how loveless we all were. That conditional thing: it means that every good time I've ever had with any JW was fake. None of it meant anything, if they wouldn't have had me there knowing that I didn't believe what they believe. Realising that got me over missing them.

Good for you Shawn. Appealing to the heart is very enabling. I'm trying to engage that way of thinking based on all the recommendations on this board.
I think its the way forward

Good job Shawn, you did the right thing by showing love no matter how they view it.
