Thanks for such an interesting post. I had never looked at the OT laws-or the NT stuff in quite that way. Tidbits of it perhaps, but you presented a very intersting argument. I love thoughtful well written posts!

Have we met? Were you one of the elders that "encouraged" me to marry because I made out a few times with my boyfriend? Did you know he was gay? Were you one of the ones who counceled him to "settle down with a nice young sister" so he could "get over" his homosexual tendancies. Were you one of the elders in any of the many halls I attended while married and miserable? It had to have been obvious that I was depressed and hated myself, why didn't you help me? Were you one of the two elders who told me you couldn't help me with my marriage unless my husband asked for help? Were you one of the elders who never called when I quit going to meetings and left my husband? Loving shepherds indeed.
Excellent, well thought out post, tsof. Obviously a sore point for me, but I'm over it, really...

I wasn't quite that bad. But I did feel woefully incompetent trying to dole out marriage advice. So many elders actually need marriage counseling themselves. Just never get it.

I know of a case where this dub couple were planning on getting married. The woman was older than the guy. She was desperate to be married; she wasn't getting in younger. As you know, you must not become unevenly yoked. So, this lady was so happy to find a man "in the truth" that would marry her. Well, it turned out that the guy backed out (I don't know why). This woman was so upset. She became very depressed. The next thing that we heard is that she had committed suicide. The elders had something to do with the break up. I wondered if the elders ever felt guilty about what occurred.
Another story is about two young ladies that thought the new ministerial servant was cute. One was very interested in the guy. As you said, women aren't allowed to initiate a relationship or ask the man for a date. She sent the other young woman over to ask him if he liked her. He said "No, not her. It's you that I like." This couple did end up getting married. The other lady became angry with her friend about it. She was sure the other woman had taken this opportunity to get the guy. They became cold towards each other and they're "friendship" broke up. Witnesses like to pretend that everyone is just one big happy family, but it isn't all that it seems.
The situation for a dub female is much harder than it is for a man to find a mate. There were more females in our congregation than males, which made for slim pickens.
