I can't offer you advice as to anti-depressents but I'm sorry you're feeling under the weather.

Not to sound like a hippy or anything, but...

I have found that switching to organic food has done a lot for me. I used to suffer from manic depression and was very lethargic. Since I switched to organic food (about 6 months ago), I have felt much better in myself. Just a thought :)

It can be a tough nut to crack so it's worthwhile to try as many safe remedies as you can.

    So what works for you?

    (((((Melinda)))))

What works for me is a bubble bath. Long hot soak, candles, soft music and a bottle of chilled champagne. Somehow I always feel better after.

Can't afford the doctors, can't afford the therapy, can't afford the meds but a few cents worth of cheap bubble bath and bottle of the bubbly work for me.

I'm not saying this is the route you should go, I totally understand there are other things to consider and if for one minute I felt I was needing serious help with any of it I would seek it. I hope you find a solution, but in the meantime try a hot bubble bath and just relax.

I was in a congregation that I knew plenty of people taking antidepresants. I myself used to take lithium which made me very sick. I then tried clonazepam otherwise known as rivotril. This comes from a family of drugs known as benzodiazepines. Rivitrol in therapy is supposed to cut off the flow of adrenaline to the heart which calms you down. Problem is adrenaline otherwise known as adenosine tri phosphate is in your body for a reason and it strengthens the heart. Side effects were tiredness and loss of sex drive. Coming off of it resulted in phychosis. Very very scary. I was a disturbed person to begin with before taking this and my phychiatric sessions were nothing more than bitching and yelling for an hour. My state of mind was hard to describe. I could watch television and see nothing but meaningless images flashing across the screen. It felt as if my brain was growing inside my head. I could only see people as meaningless blobs of meat. I was in great fear of not being able to control myself and doing something irrational. Got thoughts I didn,t want and couldn't control. I felt horror by looking into the sky and seeing the size of the universe in relation to myself and how insignificant I was. Almost like being sucked into a vortex. This is the point in my life where I decided that no matter what I felt or thought I would reject evil and used to chant this to myself over and over again. I developed a breathing technique in which I was able to calm my heart rate down due to the reintroduction of atp to my heart. For the funny feeling in my body and inablity to sleep I used to shake my feet for hours while lying in bed. This did two things. It had a rocking effect which was comforting and I told myself that all the bad energy was leaving my body through my toes. It is a fact that phychiatrists are given certain meds that they use in there practise in return for trips, bonuses etc. It is now known that three drugs recently on the market have been known to cause suicdes with some people. I have tried many more drugs in 20 years and am now convinced that the human brain which took 2 and a half million years to evolve is far to complex to be introducing new substances and understanding there effects. Progress however is being made in understanding the mind and I would like to beleive that this pseudo science will be replaced with actual cures with no side effects. I do not speak for everyone and know that we are all different but that is my opinion. I am now not as disturbed as i used to be and have learned more effective coping strategies and logic now rules my life. All my problems arn't solved yet but I will continue to fight until they are or I drop dead.

MsMCDucket, I don't know what type of depression you have, but I suffer with anxiety and OCD which manifests itself in projections of catastrophe. My psychiatrist put me on serotonin inhibiters. After trying a few out, and this is while I was going through a bad time, we found that Zoloft worked. The downside was that as much as I performed my 'husbandly duties', I was unable to reach personal satisfaction, (if you know what I mean). This side-affect I could live with because the depression was. I took Zoloft for two years.

Six months ago I changed to Cymbalta. I feel great with this drug, and no side effects (place huge smilie). And I intend to come off the drugs completely over the next six months to see if I can do this on my own.

    That's my experience.

    Hugs, Hon.

I took an SSRI for years, built up a bit of a tolerance, (basically it didn't work so well anymore,) and no matter what else I tried I had NO success (went through trying several other prescriptions, herbs, supplements, etc.)

Nothing has been able to replace that for me until now... and a few months ago my Darlin' discovered 5-HTP online. It is a precurser to seratonin, so it actually puts seratonin in your system.

Be SURE you take a vitamin B complex with it... it is needed to make sure it processes correctly.

It is working GREAT, and I mean GREAT.

Sorry if this post gets too long with this info, but I found this information about it online (you'll want to do your own Google Homework!)

    5 - HTP
What is it? What does it do?

Source: Griffonia plant from Africa. A precursor to L-tryptophan and serotonin. It raises serotonin levels in the brain.

    Used for:
    • Depression (bipolar/unipolar)
    • Heart disease
    • Insomnia
    • Obesity
    Benefits:
    • Balances mood (specifically in bipolar behavior)
    • Cuts time to fall asleep in half without disturbing sleep patterns
    • Reduces aggression
    • Reduces appetite
    • Increases beta-endorphin release
    • Creates a more relaxed waking state within 45 minutes
    • Increases pain threshold
    • Reduces severity of Parkinson's Disease symptoms
    • Reduces severity of migraine headache symptoms
    Hints:
    • Take two hours before or after meals
    • Take with high carbohydrate (sugar) snack or liquid such as orange juice
    • Avoid high protein meals close to taking 5 - HTP to allow maximum assimilation
    • Supplement Vitamin B3 (niacin) to prevent breakdown of 5 - HTP to niacinamide
    • Supplement Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, and Magnesium to maximize benefits
    Notes or Precautions
    • Don't take with Monoamine Oxidase (MAO) inhibitors
    • High tryptophan supplementation in pregnant animals has led to reduced litter and increased mortality rates, magnified by protein-rich diet
    • Excessive tryptophan levels in the brain can cause perception and mood changes. Remedy this by supplementation of B3 and B6
    • Dosages of over 6 grams can cause stress on the liver
(note: 6 grams is a completely HUGE amount, and considering that the prescription SSRI drug will stress the liver in ANY dosage, I'm feeling great about 5-htp.)

Cheers, hugs, and STRENGTH to you...
    Baba

Outlaw.... Grows wild? is that why the penguins are always drunk?

For anxiety (like when my mil was living with us) I take Calms.. it's all natural and can be found at most health food stores.. this probably isn't what your looking for, though, it's pretty mild.

Baba has some good advice, I've been reading up on this stuff and it sounds pretty good.

I had depression and took selenium, which really seemed to help. Some nature types recommend a kind of regimin of cleansing, fasting, and very natural, basic, healthy foods (Cleanse and Purify Thyself, Book 1.5 ) or something like that. Exercise. Pets. Being at or near your healthiest weight helps everything. If drugs are not working, it may be that your body does not need them or it needs something else. I am NOT anti drug, I just know that my MIL (bless her!) had gotten on so many drugs and prescriptions that they started working against her/each other. Doc weaned her off of everything and re-evaluated what she actually still needed. Her drug intake and $$$ went down dramatically and many of the 'new illnesses' that she experienced went away. They were caused by the excess of chemicals in her system. She is still on a few things-mostly the basic things all 80 year old women are on for heart, plus oxygen. But if her doctor hadn't realized what was happening, I don't think she would be with us now. She has been living in two states back and forth and no one doc had a handle on what was happening.
