Hello. If you work in IT, what exactly do you do, and did you go to school for it?

I'm a Sr. Software Developer for an insurance company. Most of our systems are written in house. I have been there almost 21 years...programming in RPG for an IBM AS400. I am now also programming in C# using visual studio. It's amazing how much things have changed over the years. When I was in school, there were no PCs around, just big midrange and mainframe computers.

Oh yea...I did go to school but I'm having to learn this new language by self study. I've already taken my first test to become a Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist and I have one more to go. One thing I've learned is that you're going to always need to be updating your knowlege because things change so quickly. Our company pays for any learning that we want to do as long as it pertains to our jobs, which is a great benefit.

Network engineer/Sys Admin.
I wanted to get into IT butt had no formal schooling or college. A position came open at a local ISP to.... to... work the front desk I took the job, it was part time and I was pioneering at the time anyway.
Worked my arse off and was the best front desk person I could be. The ISP had a languishing PC repair shop that I volunteered to take care of in my spare time. I also started taking tech support calls durning busy times. The consultant the ISP was using was from out of town so I started taking care of some server and circuit maintenance. Then the fateful day when we got DOS'd. I figured it out and put a deny ip (source ip)(protocol) I was soon asked to be the network admin for the ISP and then later the parent company. They paid for my cisco ccna and mcse. Been all blue skys and butterflys since then.

I used to be.
I started at around 14ish with home computers. Ended up with my own development company writing games. Then I worked for an international IT company. Became a communications instructor. Then an independent consultant. The biggest project I had as a consultant was to design and installed a global infrastructure for a major airline.
After so many years in IT I got bored and decided to change careers.
I now co-own a film production company. Go Figure!

I got a BS in Computer Science back in the dinosaur days of mainframes and midranges. After about 8 years, I transitioned to a business analyst role. My team was nearly offshored in 2000, so I got serious about project management and became a certified project manager.
If you're thinking about IT as a career, just be aware that more and more programming and system designer/architect jobs will be offshored. Any role that doesn't require extensive internal/external customer contact is a candidate.
