Do you remember the talks about meeting attendance?

The meetings were likened to the five fingers of the hand. With these five fingers, a person was able to grip their spirituality, represented by the brother giving the talk holding his Bible firmly and it would be a good sign of their spiritual strength therefore that they attended ALL five meetings.

However, if one meeting was missed, the grip on the Bible/Spirituality would be weaker. The brother attempts to pull the Bible from his hand.

What if a JW went down to three meetings only a week? It becomes easier to remove the Bible from the hand of the Brother giving the talk.

What if they only went to two meetings? Well it would be very easy to pull the Bible from his hand.

And of course, if you only attended one meeting a weak, you couldn't even hold the Bible!!! Obviously, such a person had NO spirituality at all, according to the WTBTS, that is?

But what could this really mean?

Well, if you attended all five meetings and did you study, the WTBTS had you seriously by the short and curlies. You were and are a real WTBTS slave! Congratulations Brother! Or should I say commiserations?!

What if you only attended three meetings a week? Well, though the WTBTS still has some control over you, it has to beat you with a stick a bit more. Perhaps you need to be marked as spiritually weak. Watchout! The Elders will be getting time in shepherding you, you badass!

What if you only attend one meeting a week? Well! By now, it is obvious you are NO WTBTS slave. You are going to be marked as a bad associate. You will no longer be invited to associate with the spiritually strong (totally brainwashed) brothers. The elders may well give you a hard time when you do attend and eventually they may ignore you completely.

So! Why not show the WTBTS a couple of fingers of your own?

Nice illustration, Gill. That grip is not actually your grip on "spirituality," but the Watchtower Society's five-fingered grip on you!

No I never heard that talk - but I can see why it would stick in the mind like it has though! I now have an image of miss a meeting become a finger amputee!

I remember that analogy too, I think I was quite impressed at the time, though now I truely wonder about the relevance. I mean, can't you make an analogy mean anything? I remember one talk about 'bouncing your sack', refering to the fact you can get more, rubbish say, in a bag if you bounce it up and down. And this was used to ask if you were getting out on the ministry enough, could you do more, even if you think your 'sack is full'. I mean, what is the relevance in that?

I remember that. The illustration fits the wt org well, as their 'spirituality' comes out of books. Lose the books, lose wt spirituality. Real spirituality has another source and comes through a person's deepest core.

    I remember the illustration well.

But, many years ago, the school and service meeting were two full hours. Now, they are 1:45. I guess that finger got cut off at the knuckle.

And, what did it mean when the district assemblies were shortened (both in hours per day and number of days) and one of the circuit assemblies was replaced with a one day assembly day?

Following the analogy even further, shouldn't there be 8 meetings per week? Just imagine trying to get the bible away from an octapus.

I remember hearing it and saying it in either parts or other things and yet the scriptures are very clear to keep a "tight grip on the Word of God", not the meetings, sad how we were duped into that line of thinking. Very tricky and sly. Reminds me of a story in Gen ch 3, maybe you heard of it?
