Are any of you vocalists?

I just posted a little of my singing lesson experience on Black Pearl's topic about piano lessons. I was just wondering if anyone else is a vocalist. Have you taken lessons? What type of music do you like to sing?

I never was in choir even in high school because I was totally committed to band; I played the clarinet. I always envied people who could sing well. So at age 30, I signed myself up for voice lessons. I took them for about a year, then quit for financial reasons (amongst others). I still sing almost every day, always in my car if I'm alone. My husband set up a really nice music studio in a spare bedroom. I have a CD player, sound system, professional microphone, a full sized digital keyboard, and so on. I love singing and I intend to keep at it and keep improving. Anyone else out there who loves to sing?

By the way, my absolute favorite type of music to sing is classical Italian.

I love to sing, though I've had no formal training.

I had professional (?) training long enough as a child to ruin any confidence I had in my ability to sing. My son Ryan though, sings professionally with the local symphony choir, as well as for weddings, etc. He sings classical/chamber type music mostly. Josh Groban type. He wants to get more into jazz and popular music-I think of some of the 'crooners' from past generations and I could see him singing those romantic soulful songs. He could start a whole new trend. He has a beautiful voice. That he got from someone else:)

I wouldn't consider myself a vocalist per se, but have been working on singing more in the band I play in, especially working on harmonies. I've been playing for 20 years but have only begun singing in the last 5. Mostly a confidence thing as I apparently have a good voice or so I'm finding, lol. I've always tried to express the music in my head through my instrument but there's much more "intimacy" in voicing it.

Kudos to you on taking the lessons and getting yourself set up for it. There is something about losing yourself in the music,......

I used to sing in music class in school, as well as when I was alone to CDs and such. After multiple scathing comments about my voice I have considerable anxiety singing in front of anyone including my boyfriend, even though he's a vocalist for a metal band and says he likes it when I sing. I've never had any training though and was never in choir because I was a JW. The national anthem was my guilty past time when I was growing up as well, though I never had the guts to sing it at any venue where someone might see me until I had left the borg.

I love to sing! Like you, I spent time in band. Fortunately, we had a chorus club which I joined so I could sing after school and in all the concerts. I've had no formal training but have thought about taking voice lessons.

I never had any formal training. I have moved around a lot and in every KH, I was known as the "SongBird"........lol

I performed songs I wrote, sang and played guitar at a high school choir event (I wasn't in choir, I played flute and piccolo in band, 1st chair) and wrote, sang and played guitar for my senior class graduation.

It is has been a strong desire to take voice lessons and be in a band. Maybe one day I will!

I have loved singing since I was a child. My parents used to sing to me, and I used to sing myself to sleep at nights! Gran was a pro and Dad inherited a lovely bass voice that he used in a classical choir. My uncle sings in the pubs of Scotland. I finally studied voice as a part of my music degree, now I teach voice and piano. If you can't afford lessons, there are some good CDs of vocal exercises out there for expanding range, warm ups, breath capacity etc. Daily practice will increase your power. Don't overdo it though or you can injure those delicate muscles.

Gawd, so many band people here! Cool!

I sing, no formal training, and I am damned good. Used to play guitars with a group of guys, and I was their little songbird, hahaha. Not a band though, cuz no one played drums, lol. I think I came out of the womb singing, ha.
