To be honest I don't put a lot of credence into anything Freud wrote.
But that doesn't negate what actually happens in any KH.

Well I have been out ofr over 20 years now. I can only speak to my 22 years in. And I can't recall one time a new person put their hand up to ask a question and was actually asked to speak.
I do recall "suggestions" that people should prepare some extra thoughts that would contribute to the discussion. Some people were good at that and often goit called on. HOWEVER, their prepared responses were always from WT literature. They weren't bringing in other writings.
And sometimes people would bring in world events that were occuring to drive home the point.
I know when my husband prepared and other elders gave talks they often handed out little slips of paper to people in the cong. I know this because I was often the recipient of these papers. The papers included the part in the talk where he wanted me to put up my hand and ask his question. This was showmanship. It was a created illusion of audience participation most often for the benefit of newcomers or perhaps just an attempt to keep people awake.
