Ok , you scholars no doubt are familiar with this term , but please be patient with a laymen like me. I found the word by linking from one of Flying High Now's threads

My point in making the post is that I never knew that other religions also teach that the soul dies at ones natural death.. The last time I had a discussion with an elder he listened to my reasoned objections and then rather pompously said "But there is so much that is right. What other religion teaches the truth about the human soul ? They all say that it is immortal "

Well, now I know that the belief is not unique to Jehovah's Witness.. Like everything else it was taken from somebody who had worked it out previously and if you want to believe that the soul dies (don't ask me whether it does or not) , there are other religions that teach it too.

If only I could pronounce the word , I might tell that elder

That's one of the things that gets my goat the most since leaving the dubs. That I trusted whatever they said other religions believed. It's kinda sad when I see that same blind faith in family currently still in. All I can say is "well, I used to feel the same way, but I've since learned this or that".

Unfortunately, that Wikpeda article does not name any of the ancient groups who believed in and taught the mortality of the soul. It does give some of the modern day Christian sects such as the Christadelphians etc. Off the top of my head I can recall the Stoics, the Epicureans, the Sadducees, and several Gnostic philosophies who did teach this.

I myself have never heard this long-winded word but if I had to have a go I would pronounce it:

" Th neto sigh kism" in four syllables.

I've never heard that term before. I have heard of Psychopannychia, though, as mentioned in the article.

Well, I just answered my own question. I googled SDA and, yes, they believe the soul dies at death. Now, what I find wierd is that my mom studied their teachings before becoming a witness. She has told me this many times but never once mentioned their belief about the soul.

You can find similar notions, as regards final judgement, under "annihilationism" or "conditionalism".

One of the most famous Evangelical leaders, John Stott, made a noted step in that direction a dozen years ago... don't know is he has been followed.

SDA's believe the soul dies with the body. I had many conversations with them in service back in the day, and also at school, this is a confirmed belief they hold. The elder BluesBrother quotes is an ignorant fool, even by Witness standards.

The SDA beliefs are IDENTICAL to the Witness beliefs on this issue and on many other issues too. They share a common Adventist heritage, after all.
