If someone says to you "dont drink the kool aid" or "thats just kool aid", in reference to some information being given, it is meant to warn you against taking the information at it's "face value" becuase it is believed the information is believed to be false, erroneous, ill-conceived, or ill-logical, despite its; appearance. As a reference, one might say that a good deal of the justification and logic used by JWs for their blood policy (not to mention some of the 'facts' used to support their position) is nothing but "kool aid".
what is kool aid?

Jim Jones of the People's Temple cult had his members drink poisen laced Kool Aid, killing many of them.
So now, to "drink the Kool Aid" means to accept the orders, dictates, policies of whatever authority your under without question. In the world of JWs, it would mean to follow whatever the Governing Body, the elders or pioneers tell you to do, without so much as questioning why. It may seem harmless, but in the end it could get you killed. An example...the blood doctrine.

Several years ago, Kool Aid was actually the Hip Hop equivalent of the Live Aid concert.
Musicians from the Hip Hop and Rap communities banded together with concerts in Europe and North America to raise funds for humanitarian relief for people in Africa, Detroit and parts of Cleveland.

Just imagine the producers of Kool aid what a terrible luck they had for their product to receive such adverse publicity because of the actions of a religious nutjob. It's a producers nightmare to get such negative associations for their product as it can affect sales. And in fact it wasn't kool aid that got laced with poison in that final act of defiance and mass suicide.

"Musicians from the Hip Hop and Rap communities banded together with concerts in Europe and North America to raise funds for humanitarian relief for people in Africa, Detroit and parts of Cleveland."
That's right, the remaining members of Kool and the Gang tried to revive their sagging profile by putting on a free concert. -

We need Sparkplug, Persephone, and MsMcDucket on here to explain the 'other' cultural usages of the term Kool-aid, since none of these explanations produced even touches upon the references these guys have common understanding of (the Movie "Clerks II" has something to do with it).

This thread jogged a memory for me. In typical WTS style, they decided to capitolize on this event by giving it its own Watchtower magazine, entitled "Are You Following God, or a Man?" It had a picture of the scene at the compound. I must have been a pretty cynical kid, becuase I remember that during the WT study I drew a little Kool-Aid man walking off through the trees singing "Oh Yeah" (from the Kool-Aid commercial at the time).
I was 14 then. It seemed pretty funny to do that at the time. It seems insensitive now.

It's what I had with baloney sandwiches when I was a kid. But I think now they use it to color hair.

kids are insensitive. It's OK. Kool-aid is also used in the fiber community to dye fibers, yarns, etc. I've done it a couple of times - really cool results. The only problem is that the colors are limited and I'm not good at mixing colors, so there isn't much variety. But it's the cheapest easiest solution to dying yarn for custom effects. Only, now I know it contains just plain old dye, I wouldn't drink it again for anything you paid me.
