Actually, I've read that alcoholism among housewives in the 1950's was very high--and a very well hidden epidemic.

My mom was not an alcoholic, but she has always been a FOOD-a-holic (no lie; gastric bypass three years ago). I know this has a lot to do with it, trying to live up to these insane standards and with a verbally abusive, minimally supportive husband.
