Getting a new PC - OSes

Dual booting Windows with Linux is relatively easy, just remember to install Windows FIRST then Linux Second.

Yeah, I pretty much got that idea down from the reading I've been doing on Linux.

Remember though, Linux isn't Windows and although there are similarities there are also a lot of differences that will take getting used to. You may find connecting to the internet difficult, so i also recommend using a Router to connect because Modems are one thing Linux is hard to work with.

I've got a router, so that's not much of a big deal.

I know that linux will take a bit of work to get used to, but so did using DOS, programming in BASIC, programming in SALT, etc etc etc. I enjoy having more raw power of the computer in my hands as opposed to less. Typing commands isn't a biggie since I'm a pretty decent typist, and I love a good challenge. I'm guessing that the most difficult part for me will be learning what the commands mean and how to use them. Anyone wanna help me when I get it up and running? ;)

sounds to me like you need to sit down and get some utilities available and scan the beast and see whats infected you machine.

It's been like this since day 1 of the install. There's also nothing like having to shut the damn thing off after doing a reboot just to get it working.

I'd probably go with this OS if there was more utilities for it. It's nice and tiny, and I can run it off a floppy:

Cool, can i also suggest - rather than scrubbing Vista, why not get some partition software *illegal or legal cough* and partition your Hard Drive, then install Linux to the second partition.

Vista does have some advantages, and you can disable most of the things you dont like, for example User Account Control. If you hate it, the Sidebar can go as can Aero (the transparency/visual effects) leaving you with some good basics to work from.

I found it performs well on my machine. A lot of people forget the critisism XP got when it was released, and all the people who waited to adopt it, now they wouldn't use anything else.

I found a lot less criticisms of XP than what Vista is getting right now. The way I look at it - if I don't like XP, I'm probably not going to like Vista either. The best MS OS I've ever used was NT 4.0. That thing was pretty solid for a Microsoft product. It worked better when I deleted that damn Dr. Watson piece of crap. I always hated that thing.

I'm putting in a TV Tuner card with my PC, so I'm wondering if I'll have to install WinXP (or keep Vista) solely for the drivers' sake. I'd prefer installing something that's older, since the hardware requirements are much lower, and it'll take up *much* less resources. That's what I like about running older OSes. I have a *cough*illegal*cough* copy of XP Pro at home.

So will you guys stop talking shop dirt and answer my question about installing W2000 directly over W98SE? LOL

    *cough*

Definitely, 2000 is cool but scrub 98 first.

Thanks! Although I was afraid you were gonna say that.

My 160GB hard drive didn't partition properly anyway (under W98SE)...so here goes again!

btw, I've got a bona fide version of W98SE, CD and certificate and all--I'll sell it to one of you blokes for just $5 (+++s/h of only $75 LOL)

No thanks, I already have an official *cough*not official*cough* copy of it at home.

Whenever a company gains a monopoly or near monopoly of a product it tends to be bad because they have no incentive to improve it. The same happened with the IE browser (which is always full of security holes) and then fortunately firefox came out filled many gaps and took something like a 25% share of the browser market. I prefer using Opera though.

    I recommend Solaris 10: http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/index.jsp

    running on a SunFire X4500 Server: http://www.sun.com/servers/x64/x4500/

BA- It works for me here.
