Are elders what they used to be?

My father was an elder of the "servant" category. He worked himself silly and worried himself to distraction with matters of PEOPLE in the congregation and how best to SERVE them.

My father and many others of our original "body" have since died. Several others, very loving and kind men, have left the org. Maybe one of the original body is still alive and still a Witness.

As time goes by, they are losing their best, most Godly men because those men cannot abide the politics and power plays.

    Water seeks its own level.

One must be a bastard to remain on the playing field with the rest of the bastards (GB, DOs, COs, etc.) These are hard and mean men, and to remain in their inner circle, one MUST BE hard and a bastard. No love gonna come from these men - no love!

p28 "We obey the elders not only because we are directed to do so in gods Word but..." "elders may lose sleep out of concern for our spiritual welfare " [ Ho Ho! ..]

p29 " Our showing an uncooperative spirit is displeasing to Jehovah""instead...we show proper respect and cooperation"

p30 " Our willing cooperation our obedience and our submission"

"Any failure or mistakes on the part of certain elders would not justify an insubordinate attitude on our part . Jehovah does not bless disobedience"

This is rich! "Obedience, submission, subordination" - who's the 'slave' here? Certainly not the 'overseers'! Good call, under_believer.

The bOrg is getting frighteningly controlling.

I ran into a JW lady a month or so ago who left her violent husband. The elders had been to visit her and told her that though they were not spiritual policemen, Jehovah hates a divorcing and that she should return to her husband!! Gill

The elders 'suggested' that I may be 'Spiritually Endangering' my spouse and kids with some of my questions and she then would have Scriptural basis for a separation.

She listened to the elders' suggestions and we separated... forever.

Now the same elders tell her that they never 'encouraged' her to separate.

Not to agree with the WTS intentionally, but the world (in general) does have a changing attitude.

Kids don't respect adults like they used to. People don't respect authority the same way.
There would be a need to enforce more basic rules as "Shut up and listen to the elders" than
there was in the past- same as kids in school are needing "Shut up and stop threatening the
teacher" lessons, where in the past, it was not necessary to say.

As attitudes change, so do elders. The WTS standards have had to dip just to have enough
    men to fill the spots.

They are all about weeding out the chaff, and everyone is just chaff waiting to happen.

    So true. You nailed it.

The good ones leave, BB. If you have a conscience, if you have compassion, if you love people, you leave the ORG. You cannot stay.
