My computer fan keeps on coming on every few minutes and it is so noisy. I knowthat the fan is to cool down the computer parts. Is there anyway that I can program the fan not to come on so often. I have a HP 519J Intel Pentium 4 processor, 512MB, 200GB. I'm not computer savy, don't know how to do all those things most of you do on here. This fan thing is so annoying and noisy. Can you help me adjust it or is this suppose to be happening to cool dowm the PC. Thanks for any help.

I have an HP m7100y and it has always been very noisy since the day I got it. You can hear it running on the other side of the house. When I go to the computer stores, the same model is always very silent but they apparently installed a very noisy fan in my model.

It sounds unhealthy or maybe old... you could try getting a longer cable so that box is further away from he monitor so you can hear it less or turn up your music to drown out the sound....

Just a thought, but have you vacuumed the dust collected by the fan? I opened my tower a month ago and there was three years worth of dust inside, especially on the fan.

One thing to ask yourself is "which fan is making all the noise?" A typical desktop computer has one fan in the front, a fan (or several) in the power supply, one on the CPU, and probably one or two on the video card. Some of them can be controlled from the motherboard BIOS settings, but if you don't know what you're doing, it's probably not a good idea to mess with them. I really wouldn't recommend altering the fan to run less often. You will probably shorten the system's lifespan this way.

Some of these fans can be replaced with "quiet" fans, which isn't hard to do. This is probably the best solution, but bear in mind that they are not as effective because they spin more slowly. The more powerful fans tend to make more noise. Does it sound like it is damaged or wearing out? Has it always sounded this way? Are you sure it's a fan and not some other part, like the hard drive?

If it's a laptop, you probably can't do much for it at all. Otherwise, open the case with the system running (don't touch anything!) and listen for the source of the noise. Then look into replacing that fan with a quieter, lower RPM model.

I don't know if it's a good idea to put oil on a computer fan inside the machine. My one is noisy when it starts but a little knock on the tower after a couple of minutes stops it perhaps the bearings are on the way out.

Definately take up the advice of other posters who recommend cleaning the fan. Also check that the fan has not become loose. In your BIOS, there should be a setting which dictates when the fan should come on. Generally systems run at 44-48 degree's C, and when they get hotter than that the fan kicks in. You can change the setting but I don't recommend it. Make sure all the ventilation holes are free in your casing and be sure to clear the clutter around your system to help it to breathe. If your system becomes to hot it is usually down to a lack of ventilation.

Oiling the fan is a bad idea. replacement is easy. Electrically it plugs in and 4 small screws or nuts hold the fan down. easy and inexpensive. They sell quite fans, and fans of all types.
