As much as the haters and ridiculers on this board scoff at the JW preoccupation with Apocalypse it is an important part of the beliefs of the Early Christians.
Yes, they were an apocalyptic sect as well.
Jesus, Paul, John all made references to the nearness of the end. Anticipation of the end was a central teaching.
Absolutely. They all seemed to think the end would come within their own lifetime. They were all wrong.
JW's are correct in carrying on that tradition.
Correct in what sense? Certainly not the sense that the original belief of early Christians was true, or the sense that their current belief is true. I'm not sure of any other sense in which they can be considered correct.
In fact it is the only Unique Selling Point the JW's have. Not that there aren't other religions that believe the "rapture" is near. But JW's see themselves as saving lives by bringing this issue to peoples homes.
Who gives a flying figment how they see themselves? Their beliefs remain ridiculous, unfounded and just plain wrong.
JW's are wrong in many ways. But it remains to be seen if they are wrong for the right reasons.
What are the right reasons to be wrong? Are there points awarded for sincerity?
If the world experiences a tribulation as the Bible describes then being members of a world-wide brotherhood could have great survival value.
Perhaps, but if we're invaded by aliens and have to fight a war with them, JWs won't be much good, will they? None of them knows how to use a gun.
I am not too proud to say that if something occurs that could definitely be described as "the disgusting thing standing in a holy place" I would join those who have been prepared by Bible prophecy to flee to a place of safety. To save my ass? Can't fault anyone for doing that can you?
Let's call that enlightened self-interest rather than cowardly opportunism. In the unlikely event that JWs or any other fringe group happen to have stumbled across a correct prediction, then it becomes prudent to behave in an appropriate manner once that prediction is proven true. But until then, I feel perfectly safe ignoring their goofy end-of-the-world nonsense.
