Some cats who were fed some of this stuff have died from kidney failure. Fortunately for my cat, i didn't have any of the above. You heard it here first.

Thanks for the heads-up, Satanus! I emailed my SIL. They have Schnauzers and use both wet and dry food.

Your welcome, frannie. Maybe it will be useful to her.

I saw this yesterday. On this web site it has the names of the pet foods and the #'s to look for. I HAVE some of this animal food. Of course I won't feed it to my pets. Do I just throw it away, or do I take it back to where I bought it or what? The web site isn't clear on what to do.

Looks like someone fouled up big-time over there. I hope everyone's pets are ok.

If this news hits the UK, their sales are going to take a serious hit (regardless of the fact that this only applies to America and it's only the 'wet' brands) - Iams and Eukanuba are two of the biggest brands amongst breeders.

Keep it. I'm sure there will be refunds. They said that if there were vet bills, they would probably be refunded by the company as well.

That's quite a lot of brands that got recalled, from what I was told the manufacturers use all sorts of weird things in the pet foods including euthanised animals and animals that died of disease or old age or got killed in accidents. Don't know if it's true though. I always give my dog food that I prepare bread containing cheese (around 20%) and butter or pieces of meat, or pasta with cheese. Wet pet food contains only 8% protein and 80 calories per 100 g and is 82% water!

I read that too, about what goes into most pet foods. It may not be the case for all of them.

hmm Greendawn, the water content is about right for most wet pet foods, it works out cheaper to feed dry if your pet can tolerate it (it's just the psychological factor of the bigger financial outlay).

As for what else goes in, I thought most of the meat (in the UK at least) is from horses and farm livestock not considered fit for humans. The only company I know who claimed that their PET food can be eaten by humans () is Pedigree. Can't imagine euthanised animals being used as the toxicity of the meat would be high in the case of anaesthetic OD method.

My cats are fed an organic dry brand, the manufacturers know where the meat/fish came from and only natural additives are put in to make up the vitamin/mineral contents.

My mom just had to euthanize her purebred chocolate lab that had sudden onset of kidney failure. She was feeding her the eukanuba wet food. Her dog was only eight years old and she is very pissed about the whole deal.

I just heard on the news this morning that one out of six pets that eat the listed foods will die.
