What Excuses Did You Use To Get Out Of Meetings & Service?

Of course no REASON is good enough. I remember an older sister had missed about 6 weeks of meetings. Her husband was not a JW. Two elders were assigned to "drop" by and find out where she was. Her husband came to the door and looked at them as if they were insane when they expressed concern about all the meetings she had missed. "She died 5 weeks ago and the funeral was last Sunday." Of course no one had "called" on the phone first. No one in her book study "called" on the phone either. I guess if you die you have to let the elders know.
I remember when a sister brought her children to the meeting when they had measles...afraid the elders would not think it a good enough reason to stay home.

Blondie, that's a powerful incident and sad. Yes, the elder shepherds know their flock, don't they?

I use working late quite often. Instead of working I'd play Age of Empires III with co-workers. So much fun! Its spring so I suspect a lot of allergy issues coming up too.

Hey Minimouse,
Illness. [mental] I still get checked on - 'We didn't see you at the ass'y.,' or 'What congo are you in now?' [several here] Now as forthright as I dare to be is "I'm 'assigned' to XXXXX Congregation," or "I'm old and tired and poor - it's all I can do to work a few hours a day. The rest of the time I'm asleep." [mostly true]
Should I reveal that I'm here all the rest of the time? My PC is actually a phone hook-up for our "meetings."CoCo

I always felt that if you are going to have a discussion with a witness you must use the scriptures and see them try to get out of it Biblically so this is what I did, below
Field service- I said I didn't want to go, wasnt living up to it so don't ask me to go, no where does Christ say you must count and turn in time.
Meetings I used Luke 4:16 And he came to Naz´a·reth, where he had been reared; and, according to his custom on the sabbath day, he entered into the synagogue, and he stood up to read. ( Good enough for the Master to go once a week, then it is good enough for me )
Assemblies, where they applied on the verses 11,12- I would use the context in verse 10 and tell them every 7 years is the way it is suppose to be; Deut 31:10-12 10 And Moses went on to command them, saying: “At the end of every seven years, in the appointed time of the year of the release, in the festival of booths, 11 when all Israel comes to see the face of Jehovah your God in the place that he will choose, you will read this law in front of all Israel in their hearing. 12 Congregate the people, the men and the women and the little ones and your alien resident who is within your gates, in order that they may listen and in order that they may learn, as they must fear Jehovah YOUR God and take care to carry out all the words of this law.
Overall 1 Thess 4:11 and to make it YOUR aim to live quietly and to mind YOUR own business and work with YOUR hands, just as we ordered YOU;

Since I put my fading plan in place, I no longer offer excuses. I simply told the people I was close to that I was no longer going to 3 meetings
a week, with feild service every Saturday, and 3 assemblies a year for the next 30 years. They can love me or leave me(their choice), but I'm not going, not
playing the game and I told them I didn't feel guilty about it, not one bit. Only one of them asked me "what about doing what Jehovah wants?" (I was still an elder at this point)
So I told them I didn't have an issue doing what God wanted. It's what men wanted that I would no longer do. Some of them were upset. They think
I am heading straight for the lake of fire. I have never been more at peace. So, no excuses and no worries for me.

The best one was when I said I had such a bad sunburn that I was nauseous. My mom showed up at the house to check on me and well, I didn't have a sunburn at all. Oops BUSTED!!

Sickness...mine, my kids, my husband's, the dog, the neighbour....the car......
Thing is, we always WERE ill when we were JWs. Now we've become 'normal' and only become ill when absolutely necessary!
