I'm looking to plant a new tree in my garden and wonder if there's anyone out there in JWD land who can give me some advice. The area is pretty sunny and quite sheltered although we do have strong winds around here in the winter. It also sometimes freezes.
There is a rich deep top soil and a clay substrate. Ideally the tree should be quite fast growing but will not exceed 30 feet. I don't want to plant conifers if I can help it. Any ideas?
Do you have flowering pear trees over there. They are hearty and beautiful all year long.......esp the Fall.

How about a flowering crab? or Magnolia? Or one of those ornamental type trees? what are they called? they are often shaped and/or drooping, quite dramatic. Corkscrew willows are interesting but messy. There is another tree, around here people call it a purple smoke (I think) it is very wispy and in spring/early summer it is purplish at the tips and very wispy/feathery.

Or Clam did you talk to the people at the nursery (where you buy trees, etc.)?
Seems to me that a Japanese Maple would be perfect for the description you made. Why don't you Google that and see. I know they don't grow tall and they need a sheltered area. Quite a lovely tree w/more delicate leaves and beautiful in the autumn. I live in Wisconsin and that is what I'd like to plant. I think our temps and seasons are pretty equal.
Let us know what you decide. Purps idea is good too.

Hey Rachel!! Good job. I just looked at the Japanese Maple and it is listed. I know from looking at gardening mags. that it is used a lot in planted areas of flowers.
How about a rowan - native to the UK, strong root system, flowers in spring and the autumn berries will attract birds.
It's fantastic to watch all the changing shades of the whole tree over the year too (as well as the flowers and the berries, the leaves go from green to deep red/orange).

Fokyc no my bet is that my tree will outlive the WTS, but if I'm wrong then the Dubs can enjoy it in the new system. I'm that nice a guy.
Purps they're lovely trees, and they're the flowering pears you spoke about? If I can find one they look ideal.

Juni I like maples but I'm worried they'd be too susceptible to wind damage. I'll speak to the people at the nusrery about it.
Emo yes the Rowan is another good option. I'll look into how fast it can grow.
Carla I've already got a flowering crab and the magnolia I don't think will be big enough but thanks anyway.
