These verses deal mostly with the consequences that Jesus followers could expect to endure for following Him and accepting Him as the Messiah. Remember that Jesus' words were addressed primarily to the Jewish audience at this time. The implications of one choosing to follow Jesus (in defiance of the first century Jewish religious leaders) were huge. Accepting the Gospel message would quite possibly be met with the penalty of being expelled from the synogogues. This would result in such individuals being shunned by long-time family and friends still loyal and submissive to the Jewish system.
When Jehovah's Witnesses shun family members (in accordance with WT policy) simply because they were unable to accept all Watchtower dogma; they fail to realize that they have reverted to the very same human legalism which Jesus had rebuked. Loyal submission and membership with an organization cannot be Scripturally justified. JWs fail to realize that such expulsion (per WT policy, not Scripture) is strikingly similar to the expulsions from the synogogues that were carried out in the first century.
The Watchtower Society is indeed fulfilling Jesus' own words. Just not in the way that they think they are.
evidently the subject isn't funny to many of us. It seems to me from reading the JWD posts that shunning is one of the most hurtful and damaging policies of JWs. Someone mentioned that no one posting on this thread thinks that JWs are the true religion. Something else to think about is that Jesus was just a man. The sermon on the mount is wonderful teaching, but there have been other wonderful teachers throughout history. The thing is we can't become slaves to an organization, even if the organization claims to base its teachings on the word of Jesus, because Jesus and similar teachers were human and therefore prone to error.
What Jesus meant with those words is the division within families that would result from the actions of the non believing members against the believers (the conflict between the children of the flesh and those of the spirit) and was not refering to action taken by believers against non believers. Once more the dubs have twisted the scriptures to suit themselves.
i had a funny disc u tion, with a Jehovas witness.
about true kristianety.
and i drive him crasy with this tekst.
he want to change the last tekst to. the hole bibel, all the time, and change Jesus Kristi word. so mush for being a Christian.
Ah once again Arthur brings us a bit of common sense thinking. The scriptures were written applying to that set of circumstances then ,but as always the WTS brings everything forward to today and gives it an extreme viewpoint which forces their adherents to reject Christ and hate the Jehovah Witness way....which is not THE WAY.
What are you witnesses doing on this website? You're gonna be in "TROUBLE " if you're elders find out. It just shows what doubt you have about you're "religion". I put Jesus first, above my family. But, guess what? I didn't have to "break up with my family". When I was in the "truth", my family accepted it. Now I'm out. Jesus is still # 1 with me, but I don't have to lose my family.
Umme yeah, their are Jehovah's Witnesses that do come onto this website trying to persuade peoples viewpoints. And as it was previously mentioned, it just goes to show us what doubts they have about their own religion, it's true.
You don't have to lose your family to believe in something, that's just foolish.

Want to hear some pretzel logic?
Jehovah's high standards requie pure worship. Don't you dare violate his pure standards.
But--wait! Jehovah forgives sinners who violate his pure standards by relaxing his perfect requirements (otherwise there would be no salvation.)
Jehovah's perfect standards are what KILLS humans.
The breaking of Jehovah's perfect standards cuts enough slack to allow salvation.
So, why doesn't this apply to humans vis a vis other humans too?
Who is more in need of being cut slack than an apostate? After all, their very life is on the chopping block.
By shunning a backslider we condemn them to death. A hospital doesn't treat healthy people, after all!
The Kingdom Hall should be a hospital for sinners and not a morgue for saints.
Pretzel Logic: Perfection=Death. Imperfection=Life.
Jesus told of LEAVING the 99 sheep still in the fold in order to SAVE one stray.
Who is the stray but the one who LEAVES THE FOLD??
