I think it is kind of like real life and here on this forum......someone has to champion the sick individual or family. Someone has to be the one to see the need and start the ball of charity rolling for the sick person.
The JWs have no formal charity in place in their organization(remember, with the Watchtower Cult the money flows only one way) So to point to any charity among the cult members, one would have to point to individuals who have taken it upon themselves to show Christian love and mercy to other members. Obviously then many needy individuals are ignored by this disorganized method.

Those efforts were not usually organized by the "congregation". It was usually some well-meaning friends who saw the need and wanted to help.
Not that the elders never asked for someone to help someone else in need, it just wasn't that common.
Compare those efforts to the congregation being asked to provide meals for traveling brothers and for pioneer schools. You could get over 60% attendance at a pot-luck meal for the pioneer school. But ask the friends to help out Sister Three-Kids-No-Husband and it was usually only the most generous and caring of the congregation that would come to their aid.

There were a few of us sisters who would take the "lead" in organizing meals and other necessary help for others. It was organized by phone and a list was kept of meals so there were no duplicates. Many signed on to help. Families had prepared meals for weeks if they were in need of long term help.
The one taking the meal was to ask what other needs they had. If someone needed a helping hand w/a job that would take the strength of a brother she would follow through with that and find a willing man.
Some didn't get involved because of age or health which is completely understandable. Others just chose not to help. Whatever.......there were always plenty of willing hands.
