...and then there's me who scrubbed Vista off my new PC in favor of Win2k and Ubuntu Linux. I never tried Win2k before, but it's surprisingly very good! Better than XP. There's quite a few people out there who would be thrilled if Microslop continued to support Win2k.

I don't think I'll be going past Win2k. If I need anything newer, I'll find it in Linux.

Oh yeah, and I'm thinking about adding another hard drive for the sole purpose of running DOS. I miss real DOS.

    Nos,

I have to say, I'm always flumoxed when people say they preferred W2K over XP. In just about every single case I've seen, XP is more stable and much less problematic than W2K. But, as all things, YMMV. (I refused to upgrade to W2K and went right from W98 to XP.)

I've had nothing but problems with WinXP on every machine I've used it on, so I figured I'd give Win2k a try, and so far it's been absolutely flawless. It surprises me given Microslop's crappy software history.

As someone who supports hundreds of computers I will give my experience - not my bias.

XP has been the best OS I've seen / better than W2k etc - really a home run from the user standpoint

Linux is GREAT as a server

MS Server 2003 / AD is a permissions nightmare

Vista has been ~ok~ drivers are an issue and on proper hardware seems to run well, esp networking. BUT what it offers over XP is not enough for the price in my mind.

We are offering laptops to our students with Vista as the default, but with XP as the alt.

.....due to a plea from over 10,000 customers on Dell's "Idea Storm" website.

LOL. I was one of them. I buy at least one computer from Dell a week. It's tough to tell your customers that they will have to pay for XP after they've already paid for Vista.

Surprisingly there is still some equipment that comes with 2000 Pro out of the box. The controller for some HP wide format scanners is a good example

I've been running my Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop (Actually a desktop in a laptop package. Everyone remarks on how thick it is.) for 2 1/2 years with Win XP Home without a hitch or glitch. Never reloaded. Hardly ever locks up. I used to reload Win 98 all the time on my previous computers. I played around with a few versions of Linux. I've booted my laptop with Knoppix 5.0 just to see if it would work, and it seems okay. If I ever have to change from XP, I'll go with Linux.
