Very good points, Tetra. Our government does like to rewrite its own history sometimes, and the media responses to current events can certainly seem to have that effect.

I was stunned how much air time his face got and how little the 32 victims were highlighted. I think his parents would have like a little less air time. One father did write the media to tell them that the victims deserved more attention. But then sensationalism sells more air time.

We have TV in the cafeteria and people were jumping up and changing the channel every time his face popped up. Finally, we turned it to a game show channel...

His face popped out on the front page of both news papers; I saw 2 people using black markers to blank his face out so they could read the rest of the paper.

How many people blew up in Iraq that day.

How many people died of starvation that day.

How many children died of AIDS that day.

    No headlines on that.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of crazies out there. They need no role models or encouragment.

    Theres a double-edged sword here.

On the one hand, airing Cho's manifesto, videos, writings, etc essentially allowed the killer to achieve post-humously exactly what he wanted: attention and recognition, even if it was in the context of infamy. I have no doubt that others in a similarly psychotic state of mind will look to his manifesto as inspiration and encouragement for actiing out in similar ways.

On the other hand, I think the police were completely wrong by asserting that this media provided by Cho contained "little valuable information". In fact, it provided an extremely rare and detailed insight into the psychological profile of a mass murderer. By making this information public, the public in turn becomes educated as to the sorts of personality profiles and mannerisms we should be alert to, when dealing with potentially dangerous individuals like this.

...and maybe also how we can all grow and change as a society so that we produce fewer pathologies in new generations.

if cho is mentally ill, then so is the society he raged against. i don't think that people like cho are solely responsible. i dunno, how many african bushmen have you heard about that took out their entire 33 member tribe?

Do you think the media goes too far with detailing such atrocities???

Thats a good question. This is the information age. There will be copy cats as this fellow paid homage to the colombine killers. The sooner you finish this life the sooner you can start the next one.

In the name of "news", some things just aren't worth doing.

I was tired of seeing his face too.

On second thought, I am changing my mind. I think many more people are being heard, telling opionions, facts, advice. Things we never knew about mental health issues and the law. Things about obtaining a gun I did not know.

It put it right in the face of America. Where we could not ignore it. It was drastic but necessary it seems, since we still have school shooting problems

Yah it's like finally a tragedy to move the Iraq deaths to another page or off peoples minds for a bit . I'm just already sick of gun control people thinking the 2nd amendment is not worth fighting for . Every country has psychopaths in it and I have to agree with tetrapod that most are run by them and if gun control needs to be applied somewhere we need to control our government .
