If it was me, no I wouldnt do it. This is only nature working its natural course. Unless of course this is a non native species. While your yard may have this bird species and no butterflys, there are other yards that have butterflys and none of these birds, it all works out in the end. Ask your local conservation orgs, and see what their opinion is. I just say let nature have it's course.

::For the first two summers we enjoyed watching the butterflies, dragonflies, hummingbirds and the rare hummingbird moth.::

Gee. Um. I'm getting this funny image of you in the Bill Murray getup from Caddy Shack out to get the wiley bird.

    I'm a sucker for hummingbirds

I found my neighbor outside this morning and I went to talk with him. He said last year he didn't see the hummingbird's and he would like to do something about this new bird. His wife will be angry if he shoots it. We both agreed to discourage this bird from nesting on our homes and hope they will go away.

The Ruby Throated hummingbird is due to arrive after Mother's day and the Eastern Pheobe has a stay of execution until May 14th. I hope the bird gets an unwelcomed feeling and disappears.

Awesome! Birds in America are so seasonal they even know your public holidays! hehe

There's a hilarious backstory in the movie Failure to Launch about a noisy mockingbird that is a huge nuisance and the supporting characters' (Zooey Deschanel as "Kit" and Justin Bartha as "Ace") demented quest to get rid of it. They stalk it and eventually shoot it with a bb gun and then, panic stricken when it appears to be dead, they do CPR on the bird.

Maybe if you get rid of this nuisance bird of yours, your Mrs. will let you have a "naked room" of your very own. If you haven't seen the movie, watch it and you'll know what I mean. LOL

You might also want to send a message to Dansk. He's our very own published bird expert. He might have some suggestions on how to make your area less inviting to the freeloading bully bird.

I saw Failure to Launch. Hilarious. Another movie, I can't remember the name, Jane Fonda was being filmed on an outdoor porch scene. A hummingbird flew into the scene and stopped behind Jane for a moment and then flew off. Apparently accidental and it was left in the scene. I wonder how many people caught it?

Crumpet, I had your thoughts in mind when I decided to give the bird another chance. Cross your fingers.

Eastern Phoebe (in the family of Flycatchers)

They return to their same nesting spot from previous years. So its nest should've been removed the first year. (I too am a softy for birds as I allowed a house finch, which is not a native species to the US, to build its nest in my Christmas wreath this spring. A cat did destroy the nest and eggs).

Being in the flycatcher family they eat insects. Unfortunately a butterfly is an insect. They will eat seeds and berries during the winter. Though you might want to put some out.

Like the others have suggested, I would find the phone # for your local Wildlife Rehabilitating Center or your state conservation department for further suggestions.

I also love the hummers and enjoy butterflies. So I can appreciate your frustrations. It's nature and their survival. Can't get upset that they want to live. Unwittingly you have set up a feeding station for all levels of wildlife. Predator and prey. Call for further advice.

Edited to say this: DON'T HAVE A CAT OUTDOORS. They are indiscriminate w/their killing. You will have NO BIRDS if you do that. Cats will kill at night while birds roost. They will kill for the attack; not because they are hungry.

    Thanks Juni.

I do have the perfect breeding ground for butterflies and dragonflies. Koi ponds and gardens.

It is frustrating to see one pair of birds destroy and discourage such a diversity of insects and birds from my backyard habitat. The Blue Swallowtail butterfly, Scarlet Tanagers who would bathe in the stream at my pond and the Rose Breasted Grosebeak which are rare, are just a few more.
